China: “Hai Gang Zhi Yuan” completes first methanol bunkering trial in Yangshan Port

Bunkering vessel “Hai Gang Zhi Yuan” on Wednesday (13 March) successfully completed the first bunkering trial of methanol by receiving fuel on shore at Shengang Oil Terminal in Yangshan Port, according to the Yangshan Maritime Safety Administration on 14 March.
The vessel is the first methanol bunkering ship ever to be in operation in China.
“The successful berthing and completion of the trial also means that Yangshan Port has the capability of bunkering methanol now,” it said.
In order to meet the methanol fuel supply demand, Yangshan Port’s Shengang Oil Terminal started transforming methanol storage tanks in the second half of 2023.
There are currently 280,000 cubic metres of storage tanks with methanol storage qualifications, which can meet the current methanol fuel supply demand of Shanghai Port.
At the same time, the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration recently officially issued the “Safety Management Measures for Waterborne Methanol Fuel Bunkering Operations”, which lays the foundation for Shanghai Port to transform into a green fuel bunkering centre for international vessels.
Manifold Times previously reported China’s first methanol bunkering ship Hai Gang Zhi Yuan arriving at Shanghai Port after completing an equipment retrofit. The process took 113 days and the ship was equipped with an advanced methanol fuel system.
The ship is not only capable of transporting methanol but also capable of ship-to-ship bunkering operations while loading and unloading containers, saving turnaround time of international liners at ports.
