Marine fuels testing agency Viswa Lab on Monday (4 April) said it recently conducted a trial of picking up bunker fuel samples from a vessel to shore for lab analysis via drone technology.
“Drones are quickly becoming a staple of the maritime industry. As the development of drone technology gathers momentum, the industry is likely to see them used in more maritime applications than ever before,” it said in an company update on LinkedIn.
The trial was carried out at Singapore Anchorage by licensed drone operators. Each trip took less than 15 minutes on average, offering a greener and faster way of transferring samples to testing facilities in busy ports and heavy road traffic which would contribute to faster sample testing turnaround time, notes Viswa Lab.
The company says it is currently evaluating the trial results and analysing how this service can be further optimized by consolidating the collection of multiple samples in one go, which ultimately would result in a lower carbon footprint per sample collection.
