Singapore: PIL and CCS ink MoU to deepen cooperation in shipping decarbonisation

Singapore shipping line Pacific International Lines (PIL) on Tuesday (16 April) said it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the China Classification Society Wuhan Rules And Research Institute (CCSWR) pledging to deepen cooperation in shipping decarbonisation and beyond on 15 April.

A directly affiliated unit of China Classification Society (CCS), CCSWR develops classification regulations and technical standards, as well as provides technical services.

The MOU was signed by PIL Head of Fleet Division Mr Goh Chung Hun and Director of CCSWR Mr Gan Shaowei. PIL CEO Mr Lars Kastrup, PIL Executive Chairman Mr S.S. Teo, and President of CCS Mr Sun Feng were also present to witness the signing ceremony.

Under the MOU, both PIL and CCSWR will explore the use of alternative fuels as well as onboard carbon capture and storage system to reduce greenhouse gases emissions from vessels.

The increased collaboration will also see PIL and CCSWR cooperate extensively in the following areas, among others:

  • Green fuel supply chains
  • Sustainability regulation compliance
  •  Knowledge sharing on marine green fuel bunkering and lashing technology
  • Upskilling personnel from both organisations on new technologies and best practices

“As we take concrete action to drive a sustainable future, we also believe in joining forces with like-minded partners like CCSWR so that we can augment each other’s efforts to achieve our common environmental goals,” the firm said.

“Putting on our future-focused lens together, we can minimise the shipping industry’s environmental footprint and make the world a better place for future generations.”

MPA and BV to promote adoption of zero and near-zero GHG emission bunker fuels

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) on Friday (6 June) said it has renewed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bureau Veritas (BV) to deepen collaboration in maritime digitalisation, decarbonisation, and talent development.

The MoU was signed by MPA Chief Executive, Mr Teo Eng Dih, and BV Group CEO, Ms Hinda Gharbi. This renewal builds on the successful collaboration since 2022.

As part of the renewed MoU, MPA and BV will explore the establishment of a BV global innovation hub in Singapore.

The hub will focus on research and application of emerging technologies with multi-industry impact. These include cybersecurity standards and guidelines, and the design and integration of new battery technologies and fuel cell systems.

Both parties will also work together on innovative digital and decarbonisation solutions. These include smart ship systems, AI technologies to enhance vessel inspection, and the use of robotics for in-water applications. Additionally, MPA and BV will promote the adoption of zero and near-zero GHG emission fuels, electrification and wind-assisted propulsion. These initiatives aim to strengthen Singapore’s MarineTech ecosystem.

To support maritime workforce development, BV will continue its participation in industry manpower programmes such as the MPA Global Internship Award, MaritimeONE Internship and Scholarship Programmes, and the Career Conversion Programme. These efforts aim to attract and nurture maritime talent to support BV’s growth in Singapore, which will contribute to the broader maritime talent based here.

Mr Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive, MPA, said, “Singapore has a strong innovation ecosystem that brings together researchers, start-up entrepreneurs and tech companies to collaborate with class societies such as BV to deploy AI, autonomy, and cybersecurity.

“We are pleased to partner Bureau Veritas, reaffirming our shared commitment to collaborate on maritime talent development and advancement in digitalisation, innovation, and decarbonisation in the maritime sector.”

Ms Hinda Gharbi, Group CEO of BV, said, “This renewed collaboration with MPA reflects our continued commitment to support the maritime industry’s priorities in digitalisation, decarbonisation, and talent development.

“By combining MPA’s leadership in maritime innovation with Bureau Veritas’s extensive global experience and technical expertise, we aim to contribute to the advancement of sustainable and resilient solutions. We look forward to the positive impact this partnership will continue to have on the industry’s future.

Singapore: MPA and Yinson GreenTech to enhance capabilities of Maritime Digital Twin

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) on Thursday (5 June) announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Yinson GreenTech to enhance the capabilities of the Maritime Digital Twin (MDT), a virtual model of Singapore’s port.

This collaboration supports Singapore’s push towards a smart, sustainable port, leveraging data and digital tools to drive efficient, low-carbon operations.

As part of the collaboration, MPA and Yinson intend to exchange relevant operational data from Yinson’s fleet of electric harbour crafts with the MDT to improve modelling, scenario testing, and enable smarter fleet deployment and optimised port operations.

Both also intend to co-develop digital workflows and solutions to support the scaling of electric harbour craft operations.

The agreement was signed by MPA’s Chief Executive, Mr Eng Dih Teo, and Yinson’s Managing Director, Jan Viggo Johansen, on the sidelines of Nor-Shipping 2025, underscoring a shared commitment to digital innovation and decarbonisation in the maritime sector.

Manifold Times previously reported Yinson Green Tech launching an electric vessel charging station in Singapore, developed in collaboration with Wilhelmsen Ships Services (WSS) for WSS’s Pandan Loop facility.

The facility is strategically positioned to support Singapore’s first fully electric cargo vessel, Hydromover, and other electric harbour crafts.

Last year, Yinson GreenTech unveiled the region’s first fully electric hydrofoil vessel, the Hydroglyder.

AM Green and Rotterdam ink MoU to establish green energy supply chain

The Port of Rotterdam Authority recently said it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India’s AM Green to focus on building a green energy supply chain between India and Northwestern Europe via Rotterdam, Europe’s first energy port and a key hydrogen carriers entry point.

This includes the supply of bunkering fuels and Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) and analysing requirements for the development of terminal infrastructure in Rotterdam and along the supply chain to Northwestern Europe.

Furthermore, the partnership will jointly support the development of strategic port infrastructure for safe distribution of hydrogen-based fuels and products, and link India’s Net Zero Industrial Clusters to Europe, enabling exports of up to 1 million mt annually. The envisaged supply chain can enable trade of green fuels up to USD 1 billion between the two economies.

AM Green is pushing its ambitious goal to develop 5 million mt of green ammonia production capacity by 2030, equivalent to about 1 million mt of green hydrogen to meet the rising global demand for green fuels, with initial production starting in Kakinada.

On the other hand, the Port of Rotterdam plays a lead role as a critical logistics and hydrogen hub for the European continent with some 13% of the total energy demand in Europe entering via Rotterdam.

Together, they aim to fulfil India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and Europe’s ambitious decarbonisation goals.

Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, said: “We are delighted to collaborate with AM Green BV to further strengthen our commitment to the energy transition. This agreement marks an important step towards establishing a robust supply chain for low-carbon fuels and chemicals.

“With India’s vast potential for green hydrogen production, combined with Rotterdam’s strategic location and advanced infrastructure, the collaboration will lead to a robust and sustainable green energy supply chain between the two regions.”
