VINSSEN hydrogen fuel cell system to be installed on RoRo ship “Penguin Tenacity” in Singapore

Maritime fuel cell technology provider VINSSEN Co., Ltd., on Monday (11 December) said it has successfully tested and delivered a hydrogen fuel cell system for a trial project involving several key industry partners.

The hydrogen fuel cell system has been delivered from Korea and will be installed on the RoRo vessel, Penguin Tenacity, in Singapore.

VINSSEN is collaborating with Shell Singapore Pte. Ltd. (Shell) as the project sponsor, Seatrium Limited as the project developer, Penguin International Limited as the owner and operator of the vessel, and Air Liquide Singapore Private Limited as the hydrogen supplier.

“This project is a pilot to test the use of hydrogen fuel cells in maritime applications, marking the first step in confirming feasibility of hydrogen as a marine fuel,” VINSSEN said in a statement.

VINSSEN signed a contract with Shell in 2022 to supply the hydrogen fuel cell for the project. A number of checks have been conducted, including HAZID (Hazard Identification), HAZOP (Hazard and Operability), and FMECA (Failure Mode and Effects, Criticality Analysis). Safety verification was performed for the installation of the hydrogen fuel cell system, and the project’s hazard confirmation evaluation and roadmap check have also been completed.

The main components of the hydrogen fuel cell system delivered by VINSSEN comprise Fuel Cell Module (FCM), Integrated Converter Module (ICM), Lithium-Ion Battery (LIB), and Transformer (TR) for vessel auxiliary power generation. The system will be used for operations in Singapore for one year, commencing in 2024 and is a project to convert data from operations into real-time data to verify stability and performance.

VINSSEN plans to deploy manpower directly to the Singapore shipyard to install, integrate, and inspect the hydrogen fuel cell system. 

The Fuel Cell System has completed all drawing inspections and factory product tests to undergo classification inspection with Bureau Veritas (BV). An inspection report will be issued upon completion of final commissioning and testing onboard the vessel.

LH2 Shipping wins Enova funding for two more liquid hydrogen-powered bulk carriers

Norway’s LH2 Shipping on Tuesday (16 June) said it has been awarded Enova support of NOK 344.3 million (USD 36 million) for the development and construction of two additional liquid hydrogen-powered bulk carriers.

With the latest award, LH2 Shipping is now involved in the development of six hydrogen-powered bulk carrier projects. The announcement builds on previous Enova-supported vessel initiatives and reflects growing momentum for liquid hydrogen as a viable fuel alternative for short-sea shipping to meet decarbonising policy goals.

The new projects represent a continuation of LH2 Shipping’s long-term strategy to establish commercially viable hydrogen-powered vessels while contributing to the development of the supporting fuel and bunkering infrastructure required for large-scale adoption.

“This award is an important strategic milestone for LH2 Shipping,” stated Ivan Østvik, CEO of LH2 Shipping. 

“It strengthens our position as a developer of liquid hydrogen-based zero-emission vessel solutions and brings us yet another step closer to our ambition of enabling a substantial fleet of hydrogen-powered vessels that can help establish a complete maritime liquid hydrogen value chain.”

Since introducing the world’s first hydrogen-powered bulk carrier projects, LH2 Shipping has focused on moving beyond demonstration concepts toward commercially deployable vessels. The addition of vessels five and six further expands the project portfolio and supports continued industrial learning across ship design, fuel systems, operations, and infrastructure.

The Enova support will indirectly enable LH2 Shipping to continue their work developing additional zero-emission solutions for passenger transport and offshore operations, supporting Norway’s broader transition toward a low-emission maritime sector.

“If we are to succeed in the transition to low and zero emission solutions in the maritime sector, we depend on players who dare to go first. LH2 Shipping shows how shipping companies can take the lead and adopt new technology. This is crucial to accelerating development and reducing emissions from shipping,” said Head of Hydrogen and Ammonia Initiatives, Elin Ulstad Stokland at Enova.

This latest Enova award brings total support for the six vessels to more than NOK 800 million and reinforces the momentum behind hydrogen-powered shipping in Norway. Through these projects, LH2 Shipping is offering ship operators to decarbonise bulk transport at scale while contributing to the development of the infrastructure and experience needed for wider industry adoption.

India’s clean energy conglomerate Agastya Group on Wednesday (3 June) said Agastya Green Fuels signed a long-term green methanol offtake agreement with Sri Lankan bunker supplier SAR Maritime Agencies, a SAR Group company, for the supply of 250,000 metric tonnes (mt) per annum of EU RFNBO RED III Compliant green methanol.

Agastya said the agreement establishes one of the largest green methanol supply partnerships in the Indian Ocean Region and marked a major step toward creating a new green maritime energy corridor connecting India and Sri Lanka.

The green methanol will be supplied from the Agastya Green Fuels Hub at Mulapeta Port, Andhra Pradesh, India, where Agastya is developing a green methanol export-oriented facility with a planned investment of USD 6 billion over the next six years. The facility is expected to produce 1 million mt per annum. 

“Through this partnership, Agastya Green Fuels and SAR Group will work together to enable green methanol storage, bunkering, and marine fuel infrastructure across Sri Lanka, positioning Colombo, Hambantota, and Trincomalee as future clean-fuel hubs for global shipping,” the company said in a social media post. 

“The Indian Ocean is emerging as the world’s next green fuel corridor. Agastya Green Fuels intends to be at its center,” said Shashi K Reddy Arjula, Founder and Group CEO of Agastya.

VO Chidambaranar (VOC) Port Authority on Friday (29 May) said it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India’s ammonia producer AM Green Ammonia to collaborate in the development of a green ammonia production plant.

The plant will have a capacity of one million tonnes per annum (MTPA) at Tuticorin.

The initiative also includes development of green ammonia handling, storage and bunkering infrastructure, pilot bunkering operations, safety procedures and training programmes. 

The project is expected to support the development of green fuel corridors connecting VOC Port with major ports in Europe and Asia, thereby strengthening India’s position in the global green fuels value chain.

VOC Port also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bureau Veritas (India) Pvt. Ltd., to collaborate on Green Port certification, emissions accounting, ESG reporting, safety validation, development of green bunkering practices, and establishment of a Centre of Excellence for green fuels and sustainability.

The port also plans for an upcoming 750 m³ green methanol bunkering facility.
