Maersk names latest methanol dual-fuel vessel after founder in Singapore

A.P. Moller - Maersk (Maersk) on Thursday (28 November) celebrated the arrival of its newest dual-fuel methanol container vessel in Singapore today, as part of her maiden voyage from Asia to Europe. 

The vessel, named A.P. Møller in honour of Arnold Peter Møller, the founder of A.P. Moller - Maersk, is the ninth vessel in Maersk’s fleet capable of operating on methanol.

Ms. Chan Su-Shan, the wife of the CEO of Temasek Holdings in Singapore, was the godmother of the “A.P. Møller”. Robert Uggla, Chair of the Board of Directors, A.P. Moller - Maersk hosted the name giving ceremony, which was attended by Mr. Murali Pillai, Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Ministry of Transport, Mr. Dilhan Pillay Sandrasegara, CEO of Temasek, Mr. Ong Kim Pong, Group Chief Executive of PSA, Mr. Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), as well as key representatives from the government in Singapore, Maersk customers and employees.

“Today marks a significant milestone in our journey of decarbonising the maritime industry. The arrival of 'A.P. Møller' in Singapore not only showcases the advancements in shipping technology but also reinforces our commitment to support solutions that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Mr Murali Pillai, Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Ministry of Transport.

“We are glad to collaborate with Maersk and look forward to furthering our efforts to make Singapore a leading hub for new maritime fuels.”

A.P. Møller is part of a series of 18 large dual-fuel methanol vessels scheduled for delivery in 2024 and 2025. Built at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea, she can carry 16,592 standard containers (TEU). Seven of these large dual-fuel methanol vessels joined the Maersk fleet in 2024.

Maersk is proud to introduce our newest dual-fuel methanol vessel in Singapore, home to Maersk Southeast Asia and Asia Pacific, and a key part of our Ocean network and integrated supply chain. 

This launch showcases our dedication to decarbonisation in the region. The energy transition of our industry is a joint-effort, and we are collaborating with authorities across the region, including Singapore, to advance decarbonisation initiatives. 

“This effort is further supported by an increasing number of customers choosing our ECO Delivery solutions. Now, we urge the International Maritime Organisation to adopt regulations that close the price gap between fossil and new fuels, encouraging even more customers to come onboard,” said Ditlev Blicher, President of Asia Pacific at Maersk.

In July 2023, the inaugural ship-to-containership methanol bunkering for the Laura Maersk was conducted in Singapore with the support of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. This was also the first ship-to-ship methanol bunkering in the country, marking a long-lasting partnership and support for Singapore's ambition to supply methanol at scale and become a key offtake location for alternative maritime fuels like methanol.

Companies signed a long term supply cooperation deal to develop a fully integrated green methanol value chain, which is expected to propel Shanghai into a regional green methanol bunkering hub.

CMA CGM, SIPG and Shanghai Electric Group join forces on green methanol bunkering

French shipping giant CMA CGM on Friday (21 March) said it has signed a green methanol long term supply cooperation agreement with SIPG Energy and Shanghai Electric Group on 20 March to develop a fully integrated green methanol value chain. 

The agreement is expected to accelerate Shanghai Port's development into a regional green methanol bunkering hub, securing its first-mover advantage in the low-carbon transformation of shipping and further consolidating Shanghai's leadership in global maritime trade.

“This collaboration underscores CMA CGM's leadership in maritime decarbonisation and strengthens our partnership with major Chinese partners,” the company said. 

Under the agreement, Shanghai Electric Group will provide mid-to-long-term green methanol fuel supply for CMA CGM. In partnership with SIPG, green methanol will be transported via land-sea combined logistics from Shanghai Electric’s production base in Taonan to Shanghai Port, the world's largest container port. 

Shanghai Electric said the agreement will form a complete “production-transportation-bunkering” chain. The company further elaborated that its Taonan project is an important foundation for it in the field of hydrogen-based green fuels.

Firmly committed to the energy transition in shipping and  its use of alternative marine fuels, CMA CGM said it has set a Net Zero-Carbon target for 2050.

Last month, CMA CGM IRON, the group's first dual-fuel methanol made its maiden call in Singapore. With a container capacity of 13,000 TEUs, it is the first in a series of 12 new dual-fuel methanol vessels for CMA CGM.

“At CMA CGM, we address the challenges related to the availability of clean fuels. Our partnership strategy drives us to implement innovative and sustainable solutions to achieve our energy transition objectives,” said Farid Trad, Vice President of Bunkering & Energy Transition of CMA CGM Group. 

“Our landmark collaboration with SIPG and Shanghai Electric Group marks a new milestone and shows our commitment to Net Zero-Carbon by 2050.”

Green ShipTech Innovation Asia Summit 2025 to be held in Shanghai on 16 May

CMA CGM to participate in bunkering trials of alternative fuels in Singapore

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the CMA CGM Group on Tuesday (18 December) said they have renewed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance sustainable shipping and innovation including in the area of alternative bunker fuels. 

Under the MoU, CMA CGM plans to expand its fleet and vessel tonnage, adding more vessels under the Singapore Registry of Ships, including four 23,000 TEU LNG vessels. 

This move reinforces Singapore's position as a maritime hub for CMA CGM and supports the company's goal of achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050. In this regard, the CMA CGM Group has invested nearly USD 20 billion to order LNG and methanol powered ships and will have 153 ships capable of using low-carbon energies (biogas, biomethanol and synthetic fuels) in its fleet by 2029.

To support the transition to more sustainable fuels, CMA CGM will register and bunker alternative fuel vessels under the Singapore flag. With its expertise and insights on alternative fuels, the company will also participate in bunkering trials.

Notably, CMA CGM Iron, the company’s first of 12 dual-fuel methanol vessels, made its maiden call in Singapore in early March 2025, marking an important step in CMA CGM’s efforts to adopt alternative fuels and collaborate with Singapore on sustainable shipping initiatives.

MPA and CMA CGM will explore pilot trials, including the test bedding of an online registry for carbon accounting, and sharing best practices for zero and near zero emission marine fuels.

Mr Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of MPA, said: "This MoU marks a significant milestone of our collaboration with CMA CGM and also demonstrates CMA CGM’s significant support towards our shared vision to drive decarbonisation and digitalisation and support manpower development within the maritime sector. By leveraging our collective expertise and resources, we aim to create a more sustainable and innovative maritime ecosystem."

Mr Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the CMA CGM Group, added, "I am pleased to renew our partnership with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, strengthening Singapore’s position as a key maritime hub for CMA CGM.”

The renewed partnership builds on an earlier MoU signed in 2022 and underscores the shared commitment to strengthening Singapore's position as a premier maritime hub.
