MASH Makes, a firm specialising in turning waste resources into sustainable commodities, on Monday (8 July) said its biofuel will be trialled on one of DS Norden’s live vessels in Singapore later this summer.

This came following recent engine trials by FVTR GmbH, a development service provider in thermal processes and machines, that showed its biofuel is compatible with the shipping industry’s stringent ISO 8217 fuel standard.

The successful engine test achieved several milestones for a B20 VLSFO blend:

  • The engine consistently delivered the required power, indicating stable combustion
  • There was no increase in carbon monoxide levels, suggesting that the spray pattern, mixture formation and combustion process were not negatively impacted.
  • Nitrous oxide emissions were comparable to those from fossil fuels.
  • The fuel injection system operated smoothly without any clogging, polymerization, deposit formation or wear.
  • The fossil blend oil was VLSFO compliant with ISO 8217 standards, and the test covered a wide range of injection pressures (from 1000 to 1600 bar) and loads (from 0% to 100%).
  • The specific fuel oil consumption did not increase compared to fossil fuel usage. In addition, even a slight decrease in exhaust temperature could be measured.

Henrik Røjel, Head of Decarbonisation & Climate Solutions at DS NORDEN, said: "These results confirm the quality of MASH Makes’ biofuel as a viable new sustainable fuel for shipping. We're excited to be part of this journey together with MASH Makes' and provide new sustainable fuel options that will support decarbonisation in shipping and other critical industries.”

MASH Makes said the biofuel industry has used the cashew value chain for feedstock for many years with mixed results.

“In contrast to other cashew-based biofuels, our fuel is an entirely new product from a unique thermochemical process that uses residues left after cashew nut shell liquid (CSNL) production. This is a novel pathway for scalable biofuel production using pyrolysis and low-intensity, low-cost upgrading,” the firm said.

“CSNL has been tested as a fuel for over a decade but has proven unreliable due to polymerisation effects thus causing issues for shipowners. In contrast, MASH Makes fuel does not exhibit these problems and is a higher-grade product.”

Uni-Fuels Holdings, (Uni-Fuels) on Wednesday (12 February) announced that its wholly owned subsidiary Singapore-based marine fuels trading and brokerage firm Uni-Fuels Pte Ltd (Uni-Fuels Singapore) has received both ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS certifications from the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC).

These certifications highlight the company’s commitment to sustainability and compliance with European Union (EU) regulations aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the maritime industry.

The ISCC certifications ensure that the biofuels traded by Uni-Fuels Singapore meet the requirements of the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED II), including the provision of Proof of Sustainability (PoS). This important documentation ensures biofuels are sustainably sourced and produced, enabling full traceability from feedstock to final product.

As the maritime sector moves toward greater decarbonization, it is essential for biofuel suppliers to demonstrate compliance with regulatory standards, including the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and FuelEU Maritime. PoS documentation ensures biofuels can be counted toward emissions reduction targets, as opposed to being treated as fossil fuels.

Uni-Fuels Vice President, Operations Tan Guan Kai, said: “Achieving ISCC certifications demonstrates our commitment to supporting the global transition to cleaner fuels.”

“With Proof of Sustainability documentation, we provide our customers with the assurance that the biofuels they rely on are responsibly produced and fully compliant with evolving regulations.”

Manifold Times previously reported Uni-Fuels Holdings becoming the first Singapore-based marine fuel provider to be listed in the United States, following its successful initial public offering (IPO) on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

NYK conducts first Japan bio bunker fuel trial on coal carrier for domestic power utility firm

Japanese shipping firm NYK on Monday (10 February) said it has started a biofuel test run on its coal carrier Noshiro Maru, which is operated by Tohoku Electric Power on 9 February.

This is the first time in Japan that a coal carrier has been used to test biofuel for a domestic power utility company. Mitsubishi Corporation Energy in the Keihin area facilitated the supply of biofuel for the vessel.

Biofuels are made from organic resources (biomass) of biological origin, such as agricultural residues and waste cooking oil, and are considered to produce virtually zero carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions when combusted.

“Since they can be used in heavy-oil-powered ship engines, which are common on large merchant ships, biofuels are considered a key means of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the transition period from heavy oil to zero-emission fuels,” NYK said.

“Using biofuel to reduce GHG emissions during sea navigation also contributes to reducing Scope 3 GHG emissions generated by transporting customers’ cargo.”

NYK added it will continue to focus on introducing biofuels and other next-generation fuels, and will contribute to reducing GHG emissions in our customers' supply chains while promoting decarbonisation in marine transport.
