Italian refiner Saras S.p.A. is planning to enter the IMO 2020 market for bunker fuels by offering ultra-low-sulphur marine fuel oil (ULSFO) avails to receiving vessels, reports Reuters.
It is currently constructing a ship-refuelling terminal at its Sardinia plant in the Mediterranean Sea to allow vessels to receive marine fuel from the 300,000-barrels-per-day Sarroch refinery located on the island.
“Today, bunkering is based mainly on blending. In the Mediterranean you have Malta, where people bring different fuels and blend it,” says CEO Dario Scaffardi.
“With the new specs, this (blending) will be very difficult to achieve for technical reasons so people like us, who will be able to produce directly the new fuel, will have the competitive advantage.
“With a small investment, we will have bunkering infrastructure and a lightering vessel and start selling locally fuels to expand the market.”
Scaffardi notes the Sardinia plant will initially be able to produce 500,000 to 600,000 metric tonnes (mt) of ULSFO per year.
“This is a new line of business and we should be able to adapt to various market needs.”
