Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard Co Ltd on Friday (8 March) announced a ceremony was held to mark the beginning of the world’s first methanol engine retrofit project to enable 14,000TEU Maersk Halifax containership to sail on methanol bunker fuel with dual-fuel capabilities.

The event officially marked the project entering the prefabrication stage where the first steel plate was cut.

The Maersk Halifax ship is scheduled to arrive at the factory in early July this year and will undergo modification and repair for about three months.

Representatives from Maersk, classification society ABS, company headquarters leaders and representatives of various departments participated in the event.

China: CCS awards first certificates for retrofitting of methanol dual-fuel engine

China Classification Society on Thursday (29 August) said it has awarded its first certificates for a modified methanol dual-fuel engine product and an eco-friendly marine engine to the Lingxian 1 , a domestic vessel owned by Zheneng Mailing.

The ceremony was held at the CCS Zhejiang Branch on 19 August

This certification marks another important achievement of CCS in assisting the localisation of China’s green energy core equipment.

“It indicates that CCS has taken a solid step forward in guaranteeing China’s green energy security,”the organisation said in its statement

CCS said it will continue to leverage its technological advantages and actively collaborate with relevant enterprises to promote the recognition and survey of high-pressure direct-injection diesel engines in methanol cylinders, and the retrofitting of the operating ship diesel engine.

X-Press Feeders takes delivery of world’s first methanol dual-fuel retrofit boxship

PaxOcean Engineering Zhoushan on Sunday (23 June) delivered the container ship ECO UMANDE after converting it to a methanol dual-fuel ship to Singapore shipowner X-Press Feeders.

PaxOcean Engineering said the 1,170TEU feeder ship was the world’s first operating container ship to be retrofitted with a methanol dual-fuelled propulsion system.

The ship was delivered by Chinese shipyard New Dayang Shipbuilding in early March this year and X-Press Feeders appointed PaxOcean Engineering Zhoushan to carry out the methanol retrofit shortly after the delivery.

The ship uses the world's first 5S50ME methanol dual-fuel main engine newly developed by MAN of Germany, equipped with shaft-driven generators, adjustable propellers, suspended flap rudders and other energy-saving devices.

PaxOcean Engineering Zhoushan said that the main engine dual-fuel modification is the key to the transformation, which requires the installation of seven new systems for methanol fuel and nitrogen in the original ship space.
