CMA CGM first to order Wärtsilä engine with new methane-reducing feature

Technology group Wärtsilä on Tuesday (21 January) said French shipping company CMA CGM is the first to place an order for its engines with a new methane-reducing feature, which will be installed on eight LNG-operated container vessels.

The company introduced its new EnviroPac feature for the Wärtsilä 34DF constant speed engine. The feature is designed to significantly reduce methane emissions while maintaining the engine’s high-power output and compliance with IMO Tier 3 NOx requirements. 

The vessels are being built at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) yard in China. The engine order for the first two vessels was booked by Wärtsilä’s joint venture company, CWEC (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., (‘CWEC’) in Q4 2024.

The eight 9200TEU LNG-powered vessels will each operate with two 6-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF and two 9-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF EnviroPac engines, as well as the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems. The Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for delivery to the yard commencing in early 2026.

When operating with LNG bunker fuel, the EnviroPac feature cuts methane emissions in half, compared to the standard Wärtsilä 34DF engine. 

This is without altering the existing power output of 520 kW per cylinder. In addition to the environmental benefit, the reduction in emissions has an impact on costs when operating in EU waters since it results in lesser penalties under both the EU’s Emissions Trading System (ETS) and FuelEU Maritime (FEUM). 

The EnviroPac feature is available for both new and latest versions of existing Wärtsilä 34DF constant speed engines.

London forum to address critical bottlenecks holding back maritime decarbonisation

The Marine Energy Transition Forum (METF) 2026 will bring together leading voices from across the global maritime sector on 11 November 2026 at Norton Rose Fulbright, London.

The forum will tackle one of shipping’s most pressing challenges: how to overcome the fuel, technology and infrastructure barriers that continue to slow the industry’s transition to net-zero emissions.

Under the theme “Reframing the maritime decarbonisation roadmap: addressing fuel, technology and infrastructure bottlenecks,” the one-day forum will provide a platform for shipowners, fuel suppliers, technology developers, ports, policymakers and financiers to examine the practical steps needed to accelerate progress while maintaining commercial competitiveness.

As the maritime industry navigates an increasingly complex regulatory and commercial landscape, METF 2026 will focus on delivering practical insight into the challenges—and opportunities—shaping the next phase of the energy transition.

The conference programme will explore five key themes:

  • The effectiveness of current regulatory frameworks and policy measures, including regional and international initiatives driving maritime decarbonisation.
  • Progress in developing a resilient multi-fuel future, examining investment, fuel availability, supply chains and infrastructure.

  • The evolving role of ports as critical enablers of shipping’s energy transition through new fuel infrastructure, shore power and energy cluster development.

METF 2026 is designed to encourage open discussion between every part of the maritime value chain, recognising that collaboration across fuel producers, shipowners, ports, technology providers, investors and policymakers will be essential if global decarbonisation ambitions are to be achieved.

The event will feature expert speakers, panel discussions and extensive networking opportunities, enabling delegates to exchange ideas, develop partnerships and gain practical insight into the strategies shaping the future of maritime energy.

MITSUI E&S completes FAT of Japan's first WinGD methanol dual-fuel engine

MITSUI E&S on Monday (3 August) announced that Mitsui E&S DU, a group company of MITSUI E&S, has successfully completed the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) of the DU-WinGD 6X82DF-M-1.0 LP-SCR, the first methanol dual-fuel WinGD large marine engine built in Japan.

The engine is also the first WinGD large marine engine manufactured at MITSUI E&S Tamano Works.

“The engine is scheduled to be installed on the first vessel in a series of four vessels being built for a domestic shipowner,” the company said on its website. 

By utilising green methanol as fuel, it will contribute to a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping operations.

“To meet the expected increase in marine engine demand under the Japanese government’s Shipbuilding Industry Revitalisation Roadmap, the MITSUI E&S Group is working to enhance production efficiency for large marine engines through integrated operation at MITSUI E&S Tamano and Mitsui E&S DU Aioi,” the company added.

Tsuneishi Solutions Tokyobay delivers first methanol fuel supply system for bulker

Tsuneishi Solutions Tokyobay (T-SOL) on Friday (24 July) said it delivered the first Low-flashpoint Fuel (MeOH) Supply System (LFSS) for medium- and low-speed diesel engines at the end of May 2026. 

The LFSS received Approval in Principle (AiP) from ClassNK in April 2024. It is the first unit of T-SOL’s proprietary LFSS developed in-house and will be installed on a Kamsarmax bulk carrier, marking its first application on an actual vessel following the AiP granted by ClassNK.

An LFSS is designed to safely and reliably supply alternative fuels with low flashpoints, such as methanol, to a vessel’s main engine.

The LFSS delivered by T-SOL has been developed specifically for medium- and low-speed diesel engines and features a simple and compact design in terms of its main components, dimensions and weight. The system is equipped with key components manufactured by Japanese suppliers, enabling the provision of instruction manuals in Japanese as well as prompt and flexible responses to customer enquiries.

As the LFSS is assembled in Japan, customers adopting T-SOL’s LFSS are not required to attend Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) overseas or arrange for engineers from overseas equipment manufacturers to travel to Japan, thereby helping reduce both costs and operational burdens for customers. T-SOL also provides on-site technical support during commissioning and testing.

With the tightening and introduction of environmental regulations, marine fuels are entering a period of transition from heavy fuel oil to alternative fuels, including methanol. 

“The transition requires new expertise and considerable time for technical evaluation, increasing the burden on customers. Drawing on the expertise of its experienced engineers, T-SOL provides comprehensive support throughout each customer’s transition to alternative fuels,” the company said. 

Following the delivery of its first LFSS, T-SOL will continue to work to ensure a stable supply of LFSS units while advancing the research and development of technologies that contribute to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction, including engineering solutions for other alternative fuels.
