Wärtsilä introduces ammonia bunker fuel supply system for vessels

Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, part of technology group Wärtsilä, on Tuesday (27 February) introduced an Ammonia Fuel Supply System (AFSS) for ships able to operate with ammonia as a bunker fuel. The system is available for both liquid and gaseous fuel.

The Wärtsilä AFSS is an innovative and reliable system that enables the use of ammonia as a marine fuel.

In line with shipping’s transition to decarbonised fuels, ammonia is widely seen as one of the most promising new fuel candidates.

It offers a huge reduction in CO2 emissions, almost zero sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions, and similar reductions in nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions.

“At Wärtsilä Gas Solutions we have more than 50 years’ experience in handling ammonia onboard ships,” said Stein Thoresen, Head of Sales Marine, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions.

“This experience, along with our deep understanding and development of high efficiency cargo handling systems in general, has led to the introduction of this system, which we see as a key enabler for decarbonised operations. The AFSS is designed to be robust and reliable, under even the most challenging sea conditions.”

The AFSS is suitable for both newbuilds and as a retrofit for existing vessels. It can be installed as an integrated cargo handling and fuel supply system on ships carrying liquified gas especially those able to trade ammonia as cargo, such as VLGC’s and MGC’s.

It can also be installed as a self-standing fuel supply system on IGF-coded vessels with either low or high-pressure systems, or a combination of both.

A system consisting of pumps and heat exchangers is used to supply the engine with a stable and reliable fuel flow, at the correct pressure and temperature.

The AFSS systems are equipped with proven components, including the necessary purge gas treatment system. Due to the need for high cleanness of the fuel, proper filtering is installed upstream and is embedded in the system.

The first Wärtsilä Ammonia Fuel Supply Systems will be installed on two new gas carriers being built at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyards (HMD) in Korea for Exmar LPG. These Medium Gas Carrier newbuilds will be the first ever oceangoing vessels to be propelled by dual-fuel engines capable of operating with ammonia.

SMW 2024: Seatrium, A*STAR to explore new energies and AI for offshore and marine uses

Singapore-headquartered marine engineering firm Seatrium and Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) on Tuesday (16 April) inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore research opportunities in new energies and artificial intelligence (AI) to develop innovative products and engineering solutions for the Offshore and Marine (O&M) Sector. 

The MoU signing took place during the Singapore Maritime Week and was witnessed by the event’s Guest of Honour, Dr Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment.

The collaboration combines Seatrium’s insights into trends and opportunities within the O&M sector with the research capabilities of A*STAR and its National Platforms such as the Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore (TCOMS). The parties aim to boost the O&M sector’s pivot to new energies efficiently and reliably, and support the global transition to a low-carbon economy. Through machine learning, manufacturing process technologies and digital solutions, the collaboration will also streamline product development and manufacturing processes, and promote innovation and sustainability in Seatrium’s operations.

The focus areas of the MoU include the co-development of:

New Energies

This includes the exploration of new energies such as hydrogen and ammonia solutions, specifically tailored for offshore and marine applications. A*STAR and Seatrium were part of Singapore’s first ammonia fuel trial on the Fortescue Green Pioneer. 

A*STAR contributed to the development of an ammonia plume model for safety and environmental impact assessment, while Seatrium was responsible for the installation of the vessel’s fuel system and safety features.

Both organisations will now focus on establishing a sustainable ammonia supply chain and addressing bunkering, transportation, and storage challenges. Coupled with carbon capture technologies, Seatrium's suite of product solutions aims to provide sustainable energy solutions for the offshore and marine sector.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The partnership leverages AI to explore innovative solutions in engineering processes, operational efficiency, and decision-making across project lifecycles. 

This includes the planned development of Large Language Models (LLMs) to improve vessel design and validation turnaround by automating and streamlining parts of the process. AI will be used to automate work site inspection and surveillance for improved operational efficiency.

Since 2008, Seatrium’s predecessor entities and A*STAR have worked on research projects such as green shipping, digital design, automation, Internet of Things (IoT) and advanced manufacturing. 

The outcomes have culminated in the development of new capabilities, including co-designing the world’s first made-in-Singapore Low Ultraviolet (LUV) Ballast Water Treatment System. 

This eco-friendly system employs energy-efficient ultra-violet rays and proprietary ultra-low frequency bio-fouling control for chemical-free treatment of ballast water.

Mr Chris Ong, CEO of Seatrium, said: “The collaborative efforts between Seatrium and A*STAR are geared towards accelerating the energy transition and maritime decarbonisation.”

“By combining our knowledge and pushing boundaries, we aim to develop advanced energy solutions that will help the industry adopt renewable sources more quickly.”

SMW 2024: Singapore is preparing port for a multi-fuel future, says Transport Minister.

Singapore has moved decisively to ensure energy and fuel resilience as international shipping looks to alternative fuels to meet global decarbonisation targets, said Singapore’s Minister for Transport Mr Chee Hong Tat on Monday (15 April).

In his speech at the Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2024 opening ceremony, he said Singapore is preparing its port for a multi-fuel future.

“Our industry has brought in new bunker tankers capable of bunkering higher blends of biofuel and methanol, paving the way for greater emissions reduction for vessels,” he said.

“MPA has also issued Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the alternative fuels ammonia and methanol over this past year.

“For our ammonia EOI, we have shortlisted six consortiums, and are studying their comprehensive proposals for the supply of ammonia for bunkering and power generation in Singapore.”

Chee added reliability and resilience also mean that Singapore upholds the highest standards for safety, efficiency, and quality. 

“Enterprise Singapore, through the Singapore Standards Council, has been working closely with industry partners to introduce national standards to support the digitalisation of bunkering supply chain documentation, as well as on methanol and ammonia bunkering.”

“As a major maritime and bunkering hub, Singapore is committed to continue serving as a trusted node for international shipping.”

Chee said this when elaborating on Singapore’s focus to grow the republic as a hub for reliable and resilient maritime operations, one of three important areas the republic will prioritise on growing its maritime sector. 

The other two areas are to grow Maritime Singapore as a hub for maritime innovation and as a hub for maritime talent development.

“Looking ahead, we expect some turbulence along the way, but we are confident that the global maritime industry will continue to grow,” Chee said.

“And Singapore as a hub port and International Maritime Centre can benefit from this growth and the opportunities it brings, including in emerging areas like digitalisation and decarbonisation.”

However, Chee warned Singapore shouldn’t take its success for granted and to continue improving productivity and competitiveness while staying relevant to changing requirements to be able to meet the needs of local and international stakeholders. 

“But we must not rest on our laurels, or make the mistake of thinking that these positive outcomes will happen on auto-pilot. A rising tide can indeed lift all boats, but the boat and its crew can only benefit if they are well-prepared when the water level rises,” he said.

Firm has decided to supply fuel ammonia to an ammonia-fuelled tugboat by tanker truck at port of Yokohama beginning in late May 2024 following a joint study agreement with NYK and Resonac.

JERA to conduct world’s first truck-to-ship ammonia bunkering operation

Japan’s power generation firm JERA Co., Inc. (JERA) on Wednesday (10 April) said it has decided to implement, beginning in late May, truck-to-ship bunkering of ammonia to an ammonia-fuelled tugboat (A-Tug) owned by NYK Line (NYK).

A ceremony announcing the decision to implement bunkering of ammonia bunker to the A-Tug was held at Sea Japan 2024.

JERA has concluded a joint study agreement with NYK and Resonac Corporation (Resonac) aimed at achieving the world’s first bunkering of ammonia to ships. 

“So far, we have jointly studied the establishment of safe methods for handling fuel ammonia and the creation of systems for transporting it to and receiving it at port areas, while also liaising with related parties about developing rules related to its supply to ships,” it said on its website. 

“Now that progress has been made on bunkering fuel ammonia to ships, we have decided to supply ammonia to the A-Tug by tanker truck at the port of Yokohama beginning in late May 2024.”

“When implemented, this will be the world’s first example of truck-to-ship bunkering of fuel ammonia.

The A-Tug is scheduled for delivery in June 2024.”

JERA added it has concluded a fuel ammonia bunkering agreement with Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha Corporation, a NYK Group company, which will operate the A-Tug, to provide it with a regular supply of ammonia.
