South Korea: Ulsan Port achieves ammonia PTS bunkering milestone

The Ulsan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries on Thursday (23 April) announced the successful completion of a pipe-to-ship (PTS) ammonia bunkering operation at Pier 2 in Ulsan Port.
The operation was carried out by Lotte Fine Chemical Co Ltd with 600 metric tonnes (mt) of green ammonia (NH3) supplied to gas carrier ANTWERPEN, built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.
According to the office, the operation marked the first commercial application of ammonia as a marine fuel for the first time in the world.
Lotte Fine Chemical said this milestone is particularly meaningful as the world’s first case to establish a full value chain of green ammonia—from production to end use.
“It spans the entire process, from green ammonia production using 100% renewable energy to international transportation, and finally to fuel supply for the world’s first ammonia-powered vessel built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries,” it said in a social media post.
An official from the Ulsan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries, said: “This ammonia bunkering is a symbolic first step in ushering in an era of eco-friendly shipping fuels at Ulsan Port, and it holds particular significance as the world’s first commercial bunkering for an ammonia-fuelled vessel .”
“We plan to continue working closely with relevant agencies to ensure thorough pre-inspections and on-site safety management based on the hazardous materials self-safety management plan.”
