As our industry faces a myriad of challenges such as the pressure to decarbonise; keeping up with the advancement of technology; unstable geopolitics and economic uncertainty; the role of SSA as a tripartite partner is more crucial than ever.

“SSA remains committed to serving our members, putting in place initiatives and offering resources to address the challenges that our members may face and helping them to not just overcome the challenges that lie ahead, but also to succeed in the face of adversity.”

Mr. Teo succeeds Ms. Caroline Yang, who stepped down as President after serving a maximum of three consecutive terms. During her tenure, she has seen the association through many challenges. Most notably, she was at the helm during the COVID-19 pandemic, putting forth initiatives that ensured safe crew changes and port operations. More recently, in light of fast-changing trade laws and regionalisation, she fostered dialogue between industry and the Singapore Economic Resilience Taskforce (SERT), voicing the concerns of the industry.

Ms. Yang, commented: “I am greatly honoured to have served as the President of the Singapore Shipping Association and would like to thank the members for their unwavering support and trust in me for the last six years. As I reflect on my time in SSA, it has been a truly valuable experience, where I have been fortunate enough to be in a position where I could help MaritimeSG and make a difference. I have no doubt that the new council succeeding me will be able to carry on the torch and do a phenomenal job.”

GAME MT

Four maritime associations have jointly launched the Global Alliance for Maritime Electrification (GAME), a coalition of nonprofit organizations dedicated to accelerating the electrification of maritime transportation, on 24 June.

With an initial focus on inland, nearshore, and commercial vessels, GAME brings together global expertise to advance zero-emission solutions through coordinated research, policy advocacy, and industry collaboration.

The partners announced the new alliance at the Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo in Amsterdam.

The four founding members, IEMA – International Electric Marine Association, ZESTAs – Zero Emission Ship Technology Association, MBF – Maritime Battery Forum, and EOPSA – European Onshore Power Supply Association, collectively represent more than 250 member organizations around the world.

“We see tremendous potential to fast-track zero-emission solutions for the world’s workboats, ferries, and passenger vessels,” said Adria Jover, President of IEMA. “By aligning our strategies, GAME members will amplify each other’s voices, reduce redundancy, and better serve this industry transition.”

“There is no room for risk. Electrification is key: zero GHGs, zero pollution, zero harm to planet,” stated Madadh MacLaine, Secretary-General of ZESTAs.

“Batteries are key enablers of zero-emission transport, but they must work in concert with other clean technologies,” said Syb ten Cate Hoedemaker, Managing Director of the Maritime Battery Forum. “This collaboration is how we ensure an effective and timely transition.”

“Electrification of ports and vessels is not a future vision – it is an actionable reality,” emphasized Roland Teixeira, President of EOPSA. “Onshore power supply is one of the most immediate tools in the decarbonization toolbox.”

BIMCO RESIZED

International shipping association BIMCO on Wednesday (4 June) launched a new subcommittee to develop a Biofuel Clause for Time Charter Parties, marking a proactive step toward addressing the legal and operational challenges posed by the growing use of biofuels in shipping.

With regulatory frameworks like the EU ETS, FuelEU Maritime, and the upcoming IMO Net-zero Framework measures reshaping fuel strategies, biofuels are becoming an increasingly attractive option for reducing emissions. Yet, their integration into charter agreements remains complex, often raising questions around fuel quality, engine compatibility, and liability.

The newly formed subcommittee, comprising shipowners, charterers, P&I representatives and technical experts, met for the first time on 7 April 2025. Its work will focus on defining the scope and standards for biofuels, clarifying how they may be supplied and handled, and ensuring that their use aligns with performance expectations and regulatory obligations.

The clause will also consider the practical realities of biofuel use, such as blending with conventional fuels, onboard storage, and the implications for speed and consumption warranties. By addressing these issues, BIMCO aims to provide a flexible yet robust contractual solution that supports compliance without compromising vessel reliability.

A draft clause is expected to be presented at BIMCO’s Documentary Committee meeting in October 2025. Once adopted, it will offer much-needed clarity for charterers and owners navigating the transition to low-carbon operations.
