International bunkering firm Monjasa on Thursday (9 November) said it has acquired two tankers for floating storage and bunker operations in West Africa.

Monjasa recently took delivery of 68,589 dwt Monjasa Leader (formerly Cabo San Antonio) in Algeciras, Spain and 13,051 dwt Monjasa Refiner (formerly Saturn) in Bremerhaven, Germany respectively.

Both tankers were then dry docked for renewal surveys, name change and subsequent hull blasting and painting matching the Monjasa fleet design.

Group Shipping Director, Torben Maigaard Nielsen, said: “The Monjasa Leader becomes our largest fleet member and represents our single most important tanker acquisition ever.”

“Given the limited opportunities of storing fuel products ashore, our floating storage solution is the backbone of our West Africa marine fuels operations and allows for our supply tankers to frequently go alongside the vessel to load cargo. Providing maritime end-to-end logistics in West Africa is a challenging task, but we are confident that our two new vessels bring the efficiency and flexibility needed.”

Since 2018, the number of Monjasa-owned vessels has increased from five to 13 to ensure highly specialised operational standards, while at the same time lowering overall operating costs.

To realise the ambition of extended fleet ownership, the Monjasa Group has significantly extended its technical ship management capacity. This has been done through further development of the in-house company, Montec, which today comprises 20+ maritime specialists based in Dubai.

Later this month, Monjasa Leader replaces SKS Dokka (119,456-dwt), which has served Monjasa on time charter for the past three years.

At the same time, Monjasa has finalised the selling process of the 13,781-dwt oil and chemical tanker, Monjasa Runner, which will be repositioned from West Africa to the Mediterranean Sea for continued operations with her new owners.

Overall, the Middle East & Africa accounts for 27% of Monjasa’s total volume of 6.4 million tonnes of bunkers supplied in 2022, while Monjasa’s fleet comprises some 30 tankers and barges deployed worldwide.

VPS bags Marine Fuel Testing and Inspection Excellence Award in Singapore

Marine fuels testing company VPS on Monday (4 December) said it was honoured with the prestigious Marine Fuel Testing and Inspection Excellence Award at the inaugural Marine Fuels 360 Awards gala dinner held on 29 November at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore.

VPS said the recognition underscored its steadfast dedication to excellence, innovation, and leadership within the maritime and bunker industry.

The Marine Fuels 360 Awards ceremony is a pioneering event in the marine fuels industry, organised by Informa Markets with an independent global panel of judges, and dedicated to acknowledging remarkable contributions and accomplishments.

The gala dinner, attended by approximately 350 prominent figures from the maritime and bunker sector, served as a platform for industry leaders to gather and recognise outstanding achievements.

“VPS's recognition in the Marine Fuel Testing and Inspection Excellence category highlights our exceptional technical expertise, professionalism, and dedication to meeting Port State Control’s bunker fuel quality requirements while promoting sustainable bunker procurement practices,” the firm said in a statement.

VPS also announced its three future core areas it will be focusing on moving forward.

“As we celebrate this achievement, we also remain committed to our future endeavours in decarbonisation, digitisation, and energy efficiency. The marine fuels industry is evolving rapidly, and VPS is actively engaged in initiatives related to the viability and realities of alternative fuels,” it said.

“Our focus includes exploring options such as methanol as bunker fuel, where VPS conducted the world’s first quantity and quality survey in Singapore, Egypt and Rotterdam.”

The firm also noted its acquisition of Xyney Maritime and Emsys supports its direction to provide data driven decarbonisation solutions, emissions monitoring and leveraging these with its existing largest database of marine fuel quality.

“This dynamic combination of existing competence with future capabilities, we believe, has been pivotal in winning this prestigious Marine Fuel Testing & Inspection Excellence Award. We are proud of the collective efforts of the entire VPS team that have led to this recognition,” it added.

“This award is a reflection of our dedication to pioneering work and sets the stage for future accomplishments in our journey toward sustainable and efficient maritime practices.”

VPS also said it will continue to be at the forefront of industry advancements, collaborating closely with the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD).

“Our ongoing work on fingerprinting biofuels aims to establish transparent methods for determining the origins of these fuels & thereby provide additional proof of sustainability,” it said.

296Singapore: Kenoil enters milestone with STS bunker delivery of ISCC certified bio-blended LSMGO

ISCC-certified  marine fuel supplier Kenoil Marine Services (Kenoil) on Friday (1 December) said it has successfully carried out the inaugural ship-to-ship bunker delivery of biofuel-blended low sulphur marine gas oil in Singapore.

The sustainable biofuel blend used in this milestone bunkering operation was a B24 composite blend of low sulphur marine gas oil and UCOME (Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester).

The 200 metric tonnes (mt) parcel was loaded onto Kosmos Lily, a bunker tanker operated by Kenoil, at Jurong Port via ISO road tankers.

This biofuel blended parcel also marked Kenoil’s first sale as an ISCC-certified marine fuel supplier to a prominent energy trader, which was subsequently delivered to a cruise ship in Singapore.

Desmond Chong, Managing Director, Kenoil Marine Services, said: “We are thrilled to play an integral role in the biofuel bunker supply chain alongside forerunners in sustainable fuels. As an established bunker tanker operator and supplier, Kenoil stays abreast of emerging developments in marine fuels by collaborating with like-minded partners to provide tangible solutions to the shipping industry to meet IMO’s carbon emissions targets.”

The growing momentum towards biofuels is attributed to the readily available supply, existing infrastructure and mature technology. Biofuels not only meet sulphur compliance regulations, they also present an opportunity for vessels to reduce their CO2 emissions.

Chong emphasised Kenoil’s steadfast commitment to green shipping through active participation in various ongoing initiatives.

“Our objective is to actively contribute to the bunker supply chain, with a dedicated focus on sustainable fuels, and play a part in the advancement of Singapore as a multi-fuel bunkering hub,” he said.
