Malaysia: MMEA detains China-registered tanker for anchoring illegally

The Penang Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) on Thursday (22 August) said a Chinese-registered tanker was detained at approximately 15.4 nautical miles northwest off Muka Head, Penang. 

State MMEA director Maritime Captain Razali Kasim said the 130.2 metre-long ship was detained at 12.50pm on 22 August.

The tanker was operated by 18 crew members, including the captain, who were all Chinese nationals, aged between 31 and 51 .All of them had valid identification documents.

However, he said the captain failed to produce any anchoring permit while explaining that they were waiting for further instructions from the company.

The case is being investigated under Section 491B(1)(L) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952, which carries a fine of not more than MYR 100,000 or a jail term of not more than two years, or both, for anchoring without permission. 

“Shipping companies are advised to take procedures and regulations seriously before entering and anchoring in Malaysian waters,” he said.

Vietnam: Fishing vessel arrested over 75,000 litres of unknown origin diesel oil

The Vietnam Coast Guard on Tuesday (19 November) said it detained fishing vessel KG-91054-TS about 18 nautical miles from Nam Tho Chu. 

The Coast Guard discovered the ship at 12.05 pm on 18 November displaying several suspicious signs and ordered the fishing vessel to stop for administrative inspections.

The authority proceeded to inspect the vessel, which had 4 crew members on board, and found it to be transporting about 75,000 litres of diesel oil with no invoices or documents proving its legal origin.

As such, it escorted the fishing vessel to Phu Quoc, Kien Giang and handed it over to the Command of Coast Guard Region 4 for further investigation and handling in accordance with the provisions of law.

Malaysia: MMEA detains tanker in Sekinchan waters for anchoring illegally

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) on Thursday (7 November) said it has detained a tanker for anchoring without permission in Sekinchan waters. 

Selangor MMEA director Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the tanker was detained by a MMEA patrol boat at 9.6 nautical miles southwest of Sekinchan at 5 pm on that day.

Investigations found that 13 crew consisting of six Myanmar nationals, four Bangladeshis and three Indonesians, were on board the tanker when detained.

Further examination of the documents found that the ship's captain failed to present any documents for permission to anchor.

The ship's captain, 56, and chief engineer, 39, have been taken to Selangor MMEA Headquarters for further investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 491B (1) (l) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952.

A Barbados-flagged bulk carrier, Flat, was arrested in Singapore waters on Thursday (17 October). 

The vessel was added to the list of vessels under Sheriff’s arrest in Singapore’s court system. 

According to the list, the vessel was arrested at 3.33am and the arresting solicitor listed was law firm Helmsman LLC. The ship is currently held at Eastern Anchorage, Grid 5315A.

No details regarding the reason behind the arrest were provided in the list.
