Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) on Friday (30 October) said it has received the orders for four units of the main engine, “6UEC60LSJA-HPSCR” a fully Japan-made ammonia-fuelled engine, which will be supplied as the main engines for four ammonia-fuelled Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs).
The vessels are part of a project to build and operate ammonia-fuelled PCTCs announced at a joint press conference on 27 October by seven companies: Imabari Shipbuilding, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Kyokuyo Shipyard Corporation, JERA Co, Shin Kurushima Dockyard, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), and Nihon Shipyard.
“The project aims to decarbonise international shipping and accelerates to create an ammonia market by establishing an ammonia fuel supply chain based in the Chubu region of Japan and by building and operating PCTCs that utilise this supply network,” the company said in a statement.
J-ENG is participating as the main engine manufacturer in this “ALL JAPAN” project, which integrates everything from the procurement and supply of ammonia fuel to the construction and operation of vessels. J-ENG will support safe and reliable vessel operations through its integrated framework covering everything from the development, design, and manufacture of 6UEC60LSJA-HPSCR to after-sales service.
J-ENG completed the world’s first full-scale, fully Japan-made ammonia-fuelled engine, “7UEC50LSJA-HPSCR,” in August 2025. This engine has been installed on an Ammonia-Fueled Medium Gas Carrier (AFMGC) being built for NYK by Japan Marine United Corporation.
“In this occasion, the new orders are marking an important step toward bringing the ammonia-fuelled engine development into wider use on commercial vessels,” it added.
