China: Port of Shanghai and CMA CGM sign cold ironing agreement

Both signed long-term strategic collaboration to develop mass scale use of cold ironing technology, the use of onshore power supply for CMA CGM containerships at Port of Shanghai.

Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd. (SIPG) and global player in sea, land, air and logistics solutions CMA CGM Group signed a long-term strategic collaboration to develop the mass scale use of “cold ironing” technology, the use of onshore power supply for containerships at the Port of Shanghai, according to CMA CGM on Thursday (15 December). 

From today all fully-fitted CMA CGM containerships calling at the port of Shanghai will systematically use the onshore power connection. By allowing ships to shut down auxiliary engines and use an onshore power supply while at berth, “cold ironing” eliminates sulphur oxide, particulate matter, and nitrogen oxide emissions, significantly improving air quality while also reducing noise pollution.

In late November 2022, the CMA CGM Group and SIPG successfully completed the technical trial of the “cold ironing” facilities of Yangshan Terminal in the port of Shanghai, which involved the CMA CGM Group’s 13,982 TEU containership APL FULLERTON and several other vessels.

The Group’s newbuild, most recent vessels are now equipped with the technology required to use “cold ironing”, and CMA CGM is conducting an extensive retrofitting program so other containerships can also use an onshore power supply. 

By the end of 2022, 13 CMA CGM vessels calling at the port of Shanghai will connect to the onshore power supply, and by mid-2023, this number will increase to reach 50.

Beyond significantly improving air quality and reducing CO2 emissions and noise pollution, this cooperation follows the successful pioneering of LNG simultaneous operation (SIMOPS) bunkering achieved in March 2022 in Shanghai, and represents yet another major milestone as part of CMA CGM and SIPG’s strategic partnership to accelerate the shipping and logistics industry’s decarbonisation.

By the end of 2026, the CMA CGM Group will have a fleet of 77 LNG powered vessels of various sizes. 32 “bio and e -methane ready” vessels equipped with dual-fuel engines and LNG-powered are already in service.

The engines deployed on these vessels already have the technical capability of using bio and e -methane, a source of carbon-neutral fuels.

In September, the CMA CGM Group announced the creation of a Fund for Energies, backed by a five-year, EUR 1.5 billion budget, to accelerate its energy transition and achieve Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2050. 

The Fund is dedicated to increasing the pace of decarbonisation across the Group’s worldwide ocean, ground and air freight shipping activity, as well as its logistics business.

In particular, the Fund for Energies will support the development and industrial-scale production of renewable energies (biofuels, biomethane, e-methane, green methanol, etc.), while accelerating the decarbonisation of port terminals, warehouses, and land vehicle fleets.

Looking ahead, we will continue to join hands and drive forward more meaningful transformations to pioneer the energy transition together.”

This year, SIPG and CMA CGM jointly established the LNG bunkering Center at Shanghai Port. Today, SIPG and CMA CGM have confirmed the long-term strategic cooperation of cold ironing, and SIPG will continue to provide onshore power supply services for CMA CGM vessels at Shanghai Port. We firmly believe that enhanced cooperation between ports and shipping companies will accelerate the journey of decarbonisation.”

Singapore-based Pacific International Lines Pte Ltd on Monday (20 July) said its first 13,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessel, Kota Elok, recently made her maiden call to Singapore on 15 July.

As the first of 13 new 13,000 TEU vessels joining its fleet, Kota Elok is equipped to operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and low-sulphur fuel oil that helps reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. 

The vessel also incorporated energy-saving features and digital technologies to reduce fuel consumption and enhance operational performance, as well as a bow windshield to improve aerodynamics, contributing to improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions over the course of long-haul voyages.

“Following Singapore, Kota Elok will continue her voyage on our East Coast Service 1 (ES1) route to South America, calling at ports in Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina before returning to Asia,” the company said in a social media post. 

Kota Elok also became PIL’s first vessel to receive Lloyd’s Register certification for compliance with the IACS UR E26 and UR E27 cyber security requirements.

Developed by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), UR E26 and UR E27 are mandatory cyber resilience requirements for newbuild vessels contracted from 1 July 2024.

CIMC SOE secures order for 12,000-cbm LNG bunkering vessel from Sinopec Clean Energy

China’s Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering Co., Ltd. (CIMC SOE) recently signed a contract with Sinopec (Beijing) Clean Energy Co., Ltd. to build a 12,000-cubic metre (m3) LNG bunkering vessel, according to Chinese maritime media.

The vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2028 and will support Sinopec’s efforts to expand its presence in the marine clean energy sector.

Once operational, the vessel is expected to strengthen Sinopec’s domestic coastal LNG bunkering network and help address gaps in China’s LNG bunkering infrastructure.

With this signing , CIMC Pacific Offshore Engineering’s LNG bunkering vessel orderbook is further strengthened, maintaining its leading position in the global market for small and medium-sized LNG bunkering vessels.

The contract also marked another milestone for CIMC SOE, which has seen a sharp increase in orders and business performance this year amid a surge in domestic LNG vessel demand.

ABS awards AiP to Korean institute for SMR-powered container ship concept design

Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) on Thursday (16 July) received Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its concept design of a 15,000 TEU Small Modular Reactor (SMR)-powered container ship utilising Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) technology.

KRISO said the AiP recognises the technical feasibility and safety of its concept design, marking an important milestone toward the development of next-generation nuclear-powered commercial ships.

“This achievement demonstrates international recognition of KRISO’s technological capabilities in the rapidly evolving field of nuclear-powered shipping, supporting the transition toward low-carbon maritime transport,” it said. 

Building on this milestone, KRISO will continue advancing basic and detailed ship design, paving the way for future demonstration and commercialisation of SMR-powered vessels. 

Through continued R&D and international collaboration, KRISO remains committed to strengthening next-generation maritime technologies and contributing to the safe deployment of nuclear propulsion in the maritime industry.
