China: CSSC announces newbuilding contract with Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping

The China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) on Wednesday (3 January) announced its subsidiary Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (BSIC) and China Shipbuilding Trading signed a newbuilding contract for four 210,000 dwt ammonia ready bulk carriers with Singapore-based shipping firm Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS).

They also signed a contract for three 210,000 dwt LNG dual-fuel bulk carriers with Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL). 

Both ship orders will be independently developed and designed by China Ship Design & Research Center Co., Ltd. (CSDC), a ship design company affiliated with BSIC. 

The 210,000 dwt ammonia ready bulk carrier for EPS will be able to meet the requirements of the third phase (Phase III) of the ship energy efficiency design index (EEDI) indicator. At the same time, an ammonia fuel main engine will later be configured to ensure that ammonia bunker fuel can be used to achieve “zero-carbon” operation throughout the ship’s life cycle in the future.

The LNG dual-fuel bulk carrier has been described as a new generation of “green and environmentally friendly” ship type.

Through comprehensive optimization of ship type design, the ship will have more efficient fuel consumption and the ship energy efficiency design index (EEDI) will be 44% lower than the baseline value. In gas mode, it will be able to perform two round-trip voyages on the China-Australia route and a round-trip on the China-Pakistan route.
