China completes world’s first commercial ship-to-ship green ammonia bunkering

The world’s first commercial ship-to-ship bunkering operation of green ammonia fuel was successfully completed in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, according to Swedish ship designer FKAB Marine Design recently.

Operated by Jiangsu Andefu Energy Development Co Ltd , Shenghang Yongle, the world’s first dedicated liquid ammonia bunkering vessel, successfully supplied 1,000 metric tonnes (mt) of green ammonia to Mineral Europa, an ammonia-powered vessel owned by Belgian maritime group CMB.TECH.

The FKAB Marine Design L21 ammonia carrier Shenghang Yongle, was recently converted to an ammonia bunker vessel, for ship-to-ship liquid ammonia fuel bunkering. The vessel was then the world’s first operational ammonia bunker vessel.

The 13 October operation was jointly conducted by China Energy Engineering Group Hydrogen Energy Co Ltd, CMB.TECH, and Jiangsu Andefu Energy Technology Co Ltd.

According to FKAB Marine Design, this marks the first time that the entire green ammonia value chain which covers production, transportation, storage, bunkering and application has been fully connected.

“It represents a significant step forward for green ammonia as a zero-carbon alternative fuel for deep-sea shipping, moving it from small-scale demonstration towards commercial operation,” the company said.
