The Johor state division of Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) on Tuesday (6 October) said it detained two vessels in eastern Johor waters for conducting illegal ship-to-ship bunker transfers, reports Bernama.

The two vessels were found by a MMEA patrol team at 1.55 pm on Monday (5 October) about 14 nautical miles east of Tanjung Kelesa, Kota Tinggi while they were performing routine inspections.

“The two vessels: a bulk carrier and a bunker tanker were found to be sailing suspiciously close together,” said Maritime Capt. Mohd Zulfadli Nayan MMEA Tanjung Sedili Maritime Zone Director.

“The detained vessels will be investigated under Section 491B(1)(L) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (MSO)1952 for anchoring without a permit and Section 491B(1)(K) for carrying out ship-to ship transfers illegally,

“Further investigations revealed that both vessels did not have the appropriate contract documents or insurance policies.”

The bulk carrier is registered in Indonesia and had 23 crew onboard, all of whom are aged between 21 to 53 years old, said the MMEA.

The bunker tanker is registered in Malaysia and had eight crew onboard, two of whom are Singaporean and the others are Indonesian aged between 22 to 44.

MMEA added that it will continue to increase its efforts to heighten security in order to ensure the safety of vessels within Malaysian waters.
