Singapore: ST Engineering unveils LNG-fuelled catamaran fast crew boat concept

Singapore-based marine, commercial and military engineering company ST Engineering Ltd on Thursday (14 May) unveiled a liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual fuel catamaran fast crew boat design.

The 76 metre boat has been developed  to enhance passenger comfort and provide cost-effective and safe transfer of offshore personnel while heading towards a future of sustainable shipping by reducing toxic emissions, it said. 

Collaboratively developed with Incat Crowther, ST Engineering added it has utilised the latest generation Wave Piercing Semi-SWATH hull form, where the vessels’ primary application is to transit at high speed with low hull motions. 

The company notes this innovative hull is fitted with a ride control system comprising a pair of forward-mounted active T-foils and aft-mounted active Interceptors.

These technologies enable comfortable high-speed transit and provide an excellent platform to operate a broad range of Walk to Work Gangways from its rear deck, when coupled with the advanced Dynamic Positioning System (DP2).

Four robust and reliable ten cylinder Dual Fuel engines, boast a maximum speed of 40 knots and a comfortable cruising speed of 34 knots through four waterjets.

With extreme volatility in oil price, offshore operators are now more conscious of operating expenses, and are always seeking for a safer and more cost-effective transfer solution, whether it is by air or sea, said ST Engineering.

The vessel offers an unrivalled transit experience to 150 passengers via two classes of seats, entertainment solutions, with elevated privacy and comfort for the most discerning executive. 

In terms of accomodation, the vessel can comfortably house 30 passengers in single cabins with ensuite and all the amenities required for quality offshore living.

“Committed towards green and sustainable shipping, we have set a new standard of personnel movement and ensured multi-market use for both our oil and gas as well as offshore wind clients,” said Michael Bell, Senior Vice President (Marketing and Business Development) of ST Engineering’s Marine sector.

“The accelerated development of medium speed dual fuel and pure LNG engines has created some exciting possibilities in the design of cleaner and greener ships. 

“Despite the physical limitations of large LNG tanks, the overall functionality that can now be accommodated in large platforms has redefined comfort and safety, whilst still maintaining the speed expectations of traditional high-speed diesel engines.”

MOL inks bio-LNG bunker fuel supply deals with Titan and Axpo for car carriers in Europe

Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) on Thursday (18 July) said it has signed new supply agreements in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean region to expand the use of bio-LNG marine fuel on MOL-operated LNG-fuelled car carriers.

Titan, part of Amsterdam-based Molgas, will continue to supply bio-LNG fuel in Northwest Europe, while Axpo will take charge of supply in the Mediterranean region.

MOL said the agreement makes it possible for its company to supply bio-LNG fuel for automobile carriers in the Mediterranean region, specifically Port of Malaga and Barcelona in Spain, following the bio-LNG fuel supply agreement in Western Europe, which commenced in March last year.

The bio-LNG fuel to be supplied in this initiative has a lifecycle carbon intensity (carbon dioxide emissions per unit of energy consumption) of -15 g-CO2/MJ or less, from production through consumption. Furthermore, this bio-LNG fuel has obtained International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC-EU). 

“Through this supply agreement, MOL has established a framework that ensures a continuous and stable supply of bio-LNG fuel not only in Northern Europe but also in the Mediterranean,” the company said.

As part of the group’s efforts to adopt alternative fuels and achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, it is utilising LNG-fuelled vessels as a bridge solution to facilitate the transition to carbon-neutral fuels such as bio-LNG and synthetic LNG (e-methane).

In 2025, MOL signed a bio LNG fuel supply agreement in Northwest Europe with Titan, part of the Molgas, and MOL has continued this bio LNG fuel supply agreement with the same company in 2026 as well.

Molgas wraps up first LNG bunkering operation at Italy’s Port of Palermo

Madrid-headquartered Molgas Energy Group on Tuesday (16 June) said it successfully completed its first LNG bunkering operation at Port of Palermo in Italy. 

The company said the operation is the result of months of preparation and the joint efforts of teams from Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Greece. 

In a 10 to 12 hour operation, three tank trucks supplied the fuel to a ferry in the Sicilian port. 

Manifold Times previously reported Molgas initiating operations in Italy with a milestone — the first-ever LNG bunkering via truck-to-ship  in Sicily.

Capital Clean Energy Carriers Corp. (CCEC), an international owner of ocean-going gas vessels, on Friday (12 June) announced the formation of a joint venture company with CMA CGM. 

Each party will hold a 50% ownership stake in the joint venture, which has been established for the purpose of constructing, chartering, and operating one 20,000 cbm dual-fuel LNG bunkering vessel. 

The joint venture marks CCEC’s entry into the LNG bunkering segment, the company’s first vessel dedicated to marine fuel supply.

In connection with this transaction, the joint venture has entered into a shipbuilding contract with Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering (CIMC SOE) for the construction of the vessel at a contract price of USD 82.8 million, with delivery expected in the third quarter of 2028.

Incorporating the latest technologies, the vessel is designed to enable safe and reliable LNG transfers across a wide range of operating conditions. Advanced emissions reduction systems, combined with highly efficient dual-fuel power generation, are designed to help the vessel meet applicable environmental standards of the global shipping industry.

In addition, the joint venture is expected to enter into a 12-year time charter with a joint venture company formed between CMA CGM and TotalEnergies, commencing upon delivery of the vessel from the shipyard.

Jerry Kalogiratos, CEO of Capital Clean Energy Carriers, commented: “This joint venture marks CCEC’s entry into LNG bunkering — a natural extension of our gas platform from carriage into marine fuel supply. 

“Working alongside counterparties of the calibre of CMA CGM and TotalEnergies, we can help build the infrastructure that allows LNG to deliver a cleaner emissions profile, alongside security and diversity of supply, while opening a new, long-term contracted revenue stream for the Company through the Joint Venture.”
