Singapore re-elected to Council of the International Maritime Organization

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) on Saturday (2 December) said Singapore is honoured to have been re-elected to the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), under Category ‘C’, at the 33rd Session of the IMO Assembly held in London on 1 December.

The IMO has 175 Member States, 40 of which serve in the IMO Council, which oversees the organisation’s work.

“Singapore was first elected to the IMO Council in 1993 and has since been re-elected to the Council at subsequent biennial IMO Assemblies,” MPA said in a social media post. 

“As an IMO Council Member, Singapore actively contributes to the discussions and work of the IMO, serving in leadership positions such as the Vice-Chair of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) and Chair of the IMO Council Working Group on Strategic Plan.”

As a major flag State, port State, and coastal State of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, MPA added Singapore provides balanced perspectives on IMO issues and makes significant contributions to enhancing navigational safety for the international maritime community, promoting efficient and sustainable shipping, and protecting the marine environment.

“We are grateful for the continued support of our fellow Member States and remain committed to serving the IMO’s aspirations and the global community for safe, efficient, and sustainable shipping,” it said.
