Korea-based HMM to charter two LNG-powered containerships

Korea-based integrated logistics company HMM on Tuesday (25 June) introduced the addition of two LNG-powered 7,700 TEU container vessels, HMM Ocean and HMM Sky, which was unveiled at a naming ceremony held in Busan. 

Ordered by Greek shipowner Navios and built by HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, the vessels will be chartered by HMM for up to 14 years and deployed on HMM’s FIM (Far East – India – Mediterranean) service, starting January 2025.

Being the first LNG-powered containerships in Korea, this milestone reflects the firm’s dedication to sustainability and strengthens itds resolve to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.

HMM President Kim Kyung-bae, said: “The LNG fuel-propelled ships being delivered this time will be of great help to HMM’s operations. We will do our best to achieve our goal of carbon neutrality by 2045.” 

Meanwhile, HMM ordered nine methanol-powered ships, which are eco-friendly ships, from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HJ Heavy Industries last year, and plans to receive them sequentially starting next year.
