The Malaysia-flagged bunker tanker Teguh 9 has been reportedly escorted to the Fasharkan Mentigi Pier at Tanjung Uban in Bintan by Indonesia naval forces on Saturday (5 January) due to alleged violations of maritime law.
The KAL Anakonda II-4-61 naval vessel was on a patrol in the waters of North Jodoh Bay when it visually spotted an unidentified tanker, Danlantamal lV First Admiral Eko Suyatno told media during a press conference at the base of Mentigi Tanjung Farshakan on Monday (7 January).
Identification of the tanker from a distance was unsuccessful due to suspicion that the AIS was turned off, and efforts to contact the vessel via FM radio channel 14 and 16 were unsuccessful, he said.
An inspection by the navy found out the Teguh 9 did not have port clearance, its 13-member crew unlicensed and without passports stamped by immigration officials.
The 1,680 GT vessel was carrying a cargo of 1762,130 KL of high speed diesel and allegedly on its way from Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia to Sambu Island, Indonesia; it was found at 010 12 '750" (north) and 1030 56' 076" (east) in the waters north of Jodoh Bay, Batam, Riau Islands.
“The findings suggest that the MT Teguh 9 vessel violated the Shipping Law. The ship was escorted to the Tanjung Uban Fasharkan Mentigi Pier for further inspection,” said Suyatno.
