Engineering firm GTT and naval architecture engineering firm Deltamarin on Wednesday (22 September) said they have received an Approval in Principle (AiP) from the classification society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for their new design applied for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuelled tanker (Aframax type).
The new LNG-fuelled tanker design employs membrane tank technology developed by GTT which has designed the tank, while its integration into the vessel has been studied by Deltamarin.
The approval from ABS certifies that the onboard integration of the membrane fuel tank solution is technically feasible for an LNG-fuelled tanker and that it complies with all safety regulations.
This new design provides a solution, which fully complies with environmental regulations adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) until 2030. Compared to a conventional oil-fuelled tanker, this new LNG-fuelled tanker design reduces CO2 emissions by at least 20%. It also offers increased autonomy without reducing the cargo volume.
“This new design further demonstrates GTT’s ambition to innovate and support the maritime industry in facing the challenges of the energy transition. With Deltamarin and ABS, we are very proud to be able to offer a new LNG-fueled tanker solution that is more respectful of the environment and without making any compromise on cargo,” says Philippe Berterottière, Chairman and CEO of GTT.
“ABS is committed to supporting the maritime industry to drive innovation in designs that can meet emission reduction objectives and to facilitating development of alternative solutions for the shipping community. Only by joining forces will we achieve success in the decarbonisation of our industry and so ABS is pleased to support GTT and Deltamarin with this AiP of an innovative Aframax design,” notes Pier Carazzai, ABS Vice President, Regional Business Development.
“Deltamarin has put a lot of effort into understanding alternative fuels and new technologies during the past years. The key drivers in this design have been energy efficiency and environmental impact in addition to operational performance and safety. It has been our privilege at Deltamarin to work with professionals from GTT and ABS during this interesting project,” says Janne Uotila, Managing Director of Deltamarin.

‘This biofuel bunker delivery represents a new chapter for Eng Hua as we are now moving with the times towards the era of decarbonisation,’ Mike Sin, Director at Eng Hua, tells bunkering publication Manifold Times.
MPA has also asked Glencore to improve its internal procedures to ensure that prompt action is taken in future when it becomes aware of, or reasonably suspects, any irregularity in fuel quality, it states.
Dynamic Asset Investments Limited and Goldsland Holdings Co Ltd helped Vermont UM Bunkering maintain a “Cash Float” of about SGD 100,000 to facilitate “buyback” bunker transactions at Singapore port.
Senior Cargo Officer gained SGD 48,800 worth of commission from “buyback” bunker transactions and illegally obtained SGD 410,712.257 by cheating Vermont, a Singapore court heard on Thursday (21 July).
Firm hopes to leverage partnership in Greece as a springboard to expand into neighbouring and overseas markets including Europe and China, says Robin Van Elderen, Regional Head Bunkers, Europe, Sing Fuels.
Singapore can help less developed countries in SouthEast Asia through ‘piloting and scaling fuels and technology as well as a leading hub for green finance’, said DNV Group President and CEO Remi Eriksen.
