French shipping giant CMA CGM and terminal operator Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) recently jointly completed China’s first ship-to-ship (STS) liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering of a ro-ro ship at the Luhuashan Anchorage.
SIPG deployed the bunker tanker HAI GANG WEI LAI to refuel CMA CGM Indianapolis with 3,199 cubic metres of LNG bunker fuel during an STS bunkering operation.
CMA CGM Indianapolis is a 7050CEU dual-fuel car carrier of the CMA CGM Group. It is also the first batch of dual-fuel car carriers put into operation by the group to actively explore the car transportation and shipping market.
As anchorage bunkering operations of car carriers faced more uncertainties due to their specific design, CMA CGM worked closely with Shanghai SIPG Energy Services Co., Ltd. to formulate an operation plan.
Gu Jinshan, Chairman of SIPG, said: “The Shanghai Port’s bonded LNG bunkering for international sailing ships has received great attention from the Shanghai Committee of the CPC and People’s Government of Shanghai Municipality, and has received strong support from relevant competent departments and units in Shanghai.”
“Bonded LNG bunkering for international sailing ships LNG bunkering contributes in creating a world-class business environment in the port city of Shanghai, and is of great significance to improving Shanghai’s port service functions and enhancing the comprehensive competitiveness of Shanghai’s international shipping center.”
In January 2022, SIPG and CMA CGM signed an agreement on LNG bunkering services in Shanghai Port. Starting at the end of the first quarter of 2022, and for a duration of 10 years, SIPG will provide Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPS) LNG bunkering service for CMA CGM’s vessels sailing from China to the United-States at Yangshan Port through a new 20,000 m3 LNG bunker barge.
