Bunker Holding highlights ‘fuel-agnostic’ approach on future bunker fuels

Bunker Holding Group CEO Keld R. Demant shared Bunker Holding’s perspectives on fuel quality, future fuels, supply and demand dynamics, and the evolving regulatory landscape at the recent IBIA Annual Convention in Athens.

As a panellist in the session for bunker sellers, he highlighted that the conversations with fellow panellists reaffirmed a view Bunker Holding holds: the future of shipping’s fuel will involve multiple fuel pathways, as various segments will adopt different fuel pathways that suit their operational needs.

“This is why we take pride in being fuel-agnostic. Our strategic aim is to facilitate shipping’s decarbonisation; not by betting on a single fuel or solution but by supporting a portfolio of low-carbon fuels, starting with biofuels and LNG, and extending to methanol and ammonia through strategic, long-term partnerships,” he said in a social post.

“As one of the world’s leading suppliers, our choices often set benchmarks, and I believe that flexibility is vital to drive shipping’s green transition forward.”

However, as highlighted at the Annual Convention, achieving net zero by 2050 requires more than just diversifying fuel options – it demands regulatory clarity.

“Regulatory measures remain the main driver towards a low carbon future, but waiting for policies that take years to effectuate is not an option we can afford. We need to act now. And it is my firm belief that the momentum built from initiatives like offtake agreements and demand aggregation can accelerate investment and encourage industry-wide progress,” he said.

He also shared some of the company’s achievements. Among other things, the firm has built a team of global experts – some of the world’s best specialists in alternative fuels and environmental regulatory affairs – who have trained nearly 50 traders, equipping them to advise clients on regulations and new fuels.

“We can now also supply biofuels in over 120 ports worldwide, and we have passed the 500th supply mark on low-carbon fuels,” he said.
