Singapore, Qingdao to explore alternative fuel bunkering along green shipping corridor

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) on Wednesday (4 November) said it has signed a Work Plan on Green and Digital Shipping Cooperation with Qingdao Port of Shandong Port Group to advance the implementation of the Singapore–China and Singapore–Shandong Green and Digital Shipping Corridors (GDSCs)

The Work Plan will translate the broader GDSC frameworks into practical initiatives across three key areas.

Under green marine fuels, both parties will explore pilot and demonstration projects for bunkering zero- and near-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emission marine fuels, including methanol, for vessels operating on direct routes between Singapore and Qingdao. They will also collaborate on studies into demand aggregation for methanol bunkering and exchange knowledge on bunkering standards and operational procedures.

On maritime digitalisation, the parties will facilitate the port-to-port exchange of ships’ operational event data by leveraging existing digital infrastructure, including MPA’s OCEANS-X platform. The initiative aims to improve visibility of vessel arrivals and support more efficient berth planning, port resource allocation and port calls.

For research and innovation, MPA and Qingdao Port will promote knowledge exchanges and explore joint research opportunities in alternative marine fuels and maritime digitalisation. These efforts will involve research institutions such as the Singapore Maritime Institute and China Waterborne Transport Research Institute.

The Work Plan was signed by MPA Chief Executive Mr Wee Keong Ang and Chairman of SPG Qingdao Port Group Mr Su Jianguang (苏建光), with Chairman and General Manager of Shandong Port Group Mr Gao Liping (高立平) also present at the signing ceremony.

Through this cooperation, MPA and Qingdao Port will work with industry and research partners to turn these initiatives into practical solutions, contributing to greener, smarter and more efficient maritime trade between Singapore and China.
