AZANE Fuel Solutions has received approval from the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB) for a test bunkering of up to 73 metric tonnes (mt) of ammonia to platform supply vessel Viking Energy, said Apollo Ammonia Project on Thursday (8 October).
The test, planned at Stord, Norway this autumn, will allow the project partners to test the vessel’s new bunkering arrangements and safety systems and gain practical experience with truck-to-ship ammonia bunkering.
The project said it is another important step in the conversion of Viking Energy and towards our goal of demonstrating ammonia-fuelled propulsion in real-world offshore operations.
“We are proud to provide Viking Energy, Equinor, Eidesvik Offshore ASA and the rest of the Apollo Ammonia Project with ammonia fuel,” AZANE Fuel Solutions said in a separate post.
“This marks another important milestone on the journey towards ammonia-powered shipping and the real-world deployment of ammonia as a marine fuel.”
In May, the project announced Viking Energy entered dock at Halsnøy Dokk A/S to begin its conversion to a dual-fuel ammonia engine supplied by Wärtsilä Marine – marking the start of this major retrofit project.
Upon completion, Viking Energy is expected to become the first offshore vessels capable of operating on ammonia as fuel in normal operations.
With EUR 5 million in EU support, the Apollo project is run by a consortium of eight European companies and institutions including Eidesvik, Equinor and Wärtsilä Finland.
