China: Hudong-Zhonghua lays keel for TotalEnergies LNG bunker vessel

French energy giant TotalEnergies on Tuesday (5 August) said a new milestone has been unlocked in the construction of its future LNG bunker vessel for the Marsa LNG Project in Oman.

On 29 July, a keel laying ceremony was held at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding yard — marking a major step forward in building the 18,600 cubic metre (m3) vessel.

“Designed with best-in-class emissions performance and maximal operational flexibility, she will further strengthen our LNG bunkering capabilities to support shipping’s energy transition,” the company said.

Manifold Times previously reported TotalEnergies signed a charter contract with Spanish shipowner Ibaizabal for a new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunker vessel of 18,600m3 capacity.

The vessel, owned by Ibaizabal, will supply LNG to a wide range of vessels (containerships, tankers, large cruise ships, ferries) at TotalEnergies’ LNG bunkering hubs.

Separately, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding said the vessel is a newly upgraded version of a LNG bunkering vessel for TotalEnergy, following the successful delivery of Gas Agility and Gas Vitality.

The vessel will have a total length of 135.9 metres, a beam of 24.5 metres, a design speed of 12 knots. It will adopt the GTT MARK III FLEX liquid cargo containment system, with a boil-off rate as low as 0.16%/day.

In 2024, TotalEnergies and Oman National Oil Company announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the Marsa LNG plant project. The ambition of the Marsa LNG project is to serve as the first LNG bunkering hub in the Middle East.
