Dutch independent shipowner Spliethoff Group is planning to install more exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) on the majority of its fleet to meet upcoming 2020 sulphur regulations.

In the coming period, scrubbers will be installed on a total of thirty vessels of Spliethoff, BigLift Shipping and Sevenstar Yacht Transport, it says.

The company’s MV Floragracht left the BLRT shipyard in Klaipeda, Lithuania on 26 June as the latest ship to have scrubbers retrofitted; the vessel is the 24th group-owned vessel outfitted with a scrubber.

In 2012, Spliethoff Group subsidiary Transfennica started by outfitting their six Con-Ro vessels with scrubbers.

Installations followed during 2014 to 2015, with scrubbers fitted on 14 S-type vessels and three C-type vessels respectively belonging to Spliethoff and sister-company Wijnne Barends.

“Thanks to scrubbers and with the support of our customers, Spliethoff Group will lower the impact of shipping on the environment and at the same time cope in a cost-efficient way with the cost increase caused by the stricter sulphur regulations”, says Arne Hubregtse, technical director of Spliethoff Group.

“As a member of the Trident Alliance, we hope authorities will show the same commitment by enforcing the sulphur rules.”
