SOHAR launches dredging operations for Middle East’s first LNG bunkering hub

SOHAR Port and Freezone has announced the commencement of dredging operations for the Marsa LNG project, the Middle East’s first LNG bunkering hub.

Led by Boskalis’ Coastway and Willem van Oranje Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers, the operation will remove approximately four million cubic meters of material to develop a dedicated approach channel and berth pocket for the LNG plant.

“With a USD1.6 billion investment, the project is a cornerstone of Oman’s energy transition, reinforcing SOHAR’s position as a key enabler of sustainable maritime growth,” SOHAR Port and Freezone said.

Keeping to schedule, dredging operations are progressing as planned, ensuring timely completion by September 2025.

“The arrival of the two dredgers marks a significant milestone in SOHAR Port and Freezone’s journey to becoming a regional leader in LNG bunkering,” said Emile Hoogsteden, CEO of SOHAR Port.

“Through the development of critical maritime infrastructure, we are laying the foundation for Marsa LNG to drive sustainable energy solutions. This project not only highlights Oman’s leadership in low-carbon solutions but also strengthens SOHAR’s position as a hub for global trade and innovation that connects businesses to the world.”

Located within SOHAR Port and Freezone, Marsa LNG will produce one million metric tons of liquefied natural gas annually, powered by a 300 MW solar plant to ensure operations are driven by renewable energy.

By integrating electric-driven technology and modern design to reduce emissions, the project aligns with Oman’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and the broader objectives of Vision 2040.

Manifold Times previously reported SOHAR Port and Freezone signing a sub-usufruct agreement with Marsa Liquefied Natural Gas LLC, a joint venture between Total Energies EP Oman Development B.V. and OQ, for the development of an LNG liquefaction plant in Sohar Port.

The project is set to establish Sohar Port as the first LNG bunkering hub in the region.

The LNG bunkering project will be the first of its kind powered by 100% solar electricity.
