Proman highlights Trinidad’s potential as a methanol bunkering hub

Methanol dual fuel tanker “Stena Prosperous” formally named in Singapore

Proman, one of the world’s largest producers and suppliers of methanol, on Monday (19 August) highlighted the potential of Trinidad as a methanol bunkering hub. 

Proman said Stena Prosperous was refuelled in the port of Point Lisas on 16 August with methanol produced at Proman’s local facilities. 

With Stena Pro Patria also being refuelled at port of Point Lisas in the coming days, the company will have supplied 2,100 MT of methanol fuel to ships in August alone, and 12,500 MT in the past 12 months, at the port. 

The 49,900 DWT IMOIIMeMAX vessels are part of the six strong fleet commissioned by Proman and Stena Bulk in 2019 and delivered between 2022 and January 2024.

Stena Prosperous had just completed her voyage from her naming ceremony in Singapore in May, stopping in Indonesia, Brazil and the U.S. port of Savannah before arriving in Trinidad. 

Having been bunkered in Singapore with a 20/80 green/conventional methanol blend, the journey to Trinidad delivered CO2e savings of 31% compared to the same voyage operated on Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO).

When used as a marine fuel, all forms of methanol virtually eliminate particulate matter (PM) and sulphur oxides (SOx) and cut nitrogen oxides (NOx) by up to 80% during combustion, compared with petroleum-based fuels. 

With all six ships now on the water operating on methanol instead of VLSFO, the GHG emissions savings for 2024 are estimated to be over 8,000 tonnes.

Anita Gajadhar, Executive Director, Marketing and Logistics at Proman, said: “Methanol is increasingly becoming a mainstream marine fuel as ship owners understand its versatility and cleaner burning properties.”

“Because every methanol molecule is the same, no matter what feedstock it is produced from, it can be blended as production of green methanol is ramped up over time, providing a pathway to net zero.”

“Stena Prosperous’ journey from Singapore to Trinidad has showcased this and the ability of ship owners to meet the trajectory of greenhouse gas emissions reductions required by the IMO and regulatory frameworks such as Fuel EU Maritime with methanol.”

Proman added methanol is widely available at over 120 ports globally, including Point Lisas in Trinidad, where methanol refuelling is now regularly conducted. Data from DNV shows that 300 methanol fuelled vessels are expected to be on the water by 2027, not including bunker barges or retrofits, and over 70 have been ordered so far in 2024 alone.

Aleeya Ali, Managing Director of Operations for Proman Trinidad, said: “The huge increase in orders for methanol-fuelled ships, and our regular refuelling here in Trinidad, shows the viability of methanol as a marine fuel and the potential of Point Lisas and Trinidad as a bunkering hub.”

“We are proud to not only export Trinidad produced methanol, which supports jobs, the local economy and our communities, but to also put Trinidad on the map as a hub for cleaner, alternative marine fuels.”

Singapore-based Pacific International Lines Pte Ltd on Monday (20 July) said its first 13,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessel, Kota Elok, recently made her maiden call to Singapore on 15 July.

As the first of 13 new 13,000 TEU vessels joining its fleet, Kota Elok is equipped to operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and low-sulphur fuel oil that helps reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. 

The vessel also incorporated energy-saving features and digital technologies to reduce fuel consumption and enhance operational performance, as well as a bow windshield to improve aerodynamics, contributing to improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions over the course of long-haul voyages.

“Following Singapore, Kota Elok will continue her voyage on our East Coast Service 1 (ES1) route to South America, calling at ports in Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina before returning to Asia,” the company said in a social media post. 

Kota Elok also became PIL’s first vessel to receive Lloyd’s Register certification for compliance with the IACS UR E26 and UR E27 cyber security requirements.

Developed by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), UR E26 and UR E27 are mandatory cyber resilience requirements for newbuild vessels contracted from 1 July 2024.

CIMC SOE secures order for 12,000-cbm LNG bunkering vessel from Sinopec Clean Energy

China’s Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering Co., Ltd. (CIMC SOE) recently signed a contract with Sinopec (Beijing) Clean Energy Co., Ltd. to build a 12,000-cubic metre (m3) LNG bunkering vessel, according to Chinese maritime media.

The vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2028 and will support Sinopec’s efforts to expand its presence in the marine clean energy sector.

Once operational, the vessel is expected to strengthen Sinopec’s domestic coastal LNG bunkering network and help address gaps in China’s LNG bunkering infrastructure.

With this signing , CIMC Pacific Offshore Engineering’s LNG bunkering vessel orderbook is further strengthened, maintaining its leading position in the global market for small and medium-sized LNG bunkering vessels.

The contract also marked another milestone for CIMC SOE, which has seen a sharp increase in orders and business performance this year amid a surge in domestic LNG vessel demand.

ABS awards AiP to Korean institute for SMR-powered container ship concept design

Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) on Thursday (16 July) received Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its concept design of a 15,000 TEU Small Modular Reactor (SMR)-powered container ship utilising Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) technology.

KRISO said the AiP recognises the technical feasibility and safety of its concept design, marking an important milestone toward the development of next-generation nuclear-powered commercial ships.

“This achievement demonstrates international recognition of KRISO’s technological capabilities in the rapidly evolving field of nuclear-powered shipping, supporting the transition toward low-carbon maritime transport,” it said. 

Building on this milestone, KRISO will continue advancing basic and detailed ship design, paving the way for future demonstration and commercialisation of SMR-powered vessels. 

Through continued R&D and international collaboration, KRISO remains committed to strengthening next-generation maritime technologies and contributing to the safe deployment of nuclear propulsion in the maritime industry.
