Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) recently revealed its short-term and long-term business plans, ranging from alternative energy sources such as biofuels to preparation in developing carbon transport and storage businesses.

The company outlined these plans at an international forum at the Shipbuilding, Machinery and Marine (SMM) in Hamburg, Germany. PIS’ Fleet Management Director, M. Irfan Zainul Fikri, was one of the speakers at the renowned international forum discussing the maritime industry.

Addressing representatives of the global maritime industry, Irfan stated that PIS is transforming into a modern company with environmentally friendly operations and business models. He also emphasized that PIS aims to reduce their total carbon emissions by 30% by 2030.

“Our strategy involves investing in the development and adoption of low-emission fuels such as biofuels, LNG, ammonia, and methanol to operate our fleet,” said Irfan during a panel session on the future of maritime held in early September.

Several ships in PIS’ fleet, particularly those operating domestically, have already started using biofuels, supported by Pertamina’s biofuel infrastructure. Additionally, new ships being introduced are being prepared to use low-carbon alternative fuels.

These include MR Tankers with dual-fuel-ready LNG technology and Handysize LPG vessels with dual-fuel-ready ammonia technology. PIS’s fleet also features Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs) equipped with dual-fuel-ready ammonia technology. Irfan also mentioned that PIS is exploring new energy sources such as batteries and hydrogen for future use.
