OCI Global awarded first green methanol bunkering permit at Egypt ports

Dutch methanol producer OCI Global on Monday (18 September) said it was awarded the first green methanol bunkering permit in Egypt’s East Port Said and West Port Said.
OCI Global said the permit is a direct response to growing demand for green methanol as a bunker fuel as the industry recognises its readiness, efficacy and safety.
“It lays the groundwork for future green methanol powered ships by formalising the process established by our successful bunkering of the world’s first green methanol powered container ship in East Port Said earlier this year,” it said in a social media post.
“It’s an important milestone in establishing Egypt as a crucial green methanol bunkering hub and a leader in shipping decarbonisation.”
Bashir Lebada, CEO, OCI Methanol/ HyFuels, said: “We are very pleased with this partnership with Egypt and the SCZone following the successful bunkering of the first ever vessel running on green methanol in East Port Said. Egypt will provide to be an important green bunkering hub in the coming years and will play an essential part of our global bunker network.”
The General Authority of Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) on 18 September said its board of directors approved the issuance of a six-month renewable permit for OCI Global’s renewable and low carbon fuels brand, OCI HyFuel, to provide green methanol bunkering service at East port Said port and West Port Said port.
“This supports SCZONE’s continuous efforts to provide bunkering services with conventional and green fuels at its affiliated ports,” SCZONE said.
Manifold Times previously reported the General Authority of SCZone announcing the success of the first green bunkering operation with methanol in East Port Said port for AP Moller-Maersk’s methanol-powered container vessel on 17 August.
The authority said the supply service took nearly six hours and the operation is the first of its kind in Egypt, Africa, and the Middle East.
