India: Wärtsilä to explore converting SCI vessels to operate on green methanol bunker fuel

Technology group Wärtsilä on Tuesday (7 November) said it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Shipping Corporation of India Ltd (SCI) to explore options for converting at least two SCI vessels to be capable of operating on green methanol bunker fuel.
Wärtsilä said the strategic partnership will play an important role in SCI’s strategy to reduce GHG emissions from its operations.
“Wärtsilä will support by carrying out a feasibility study, and delivering a proposal for the conversion of these vessels to operate on green methanol,” it said in a social media post.
“At Wärtsilä, we are committed to delivering environmentally sustainable technologies that will accelerate the transition to carbon-free shipping. We are honoured to be supporting SCI with their decarbonisation journey through this strategic partnership.”
SCI’s owned fleet includes bulk carriers, crude oil tankers, product tankers, container vessels, passenger-cum-cargo vessels, LPG and offshore supply vessels.
