Höegh Autoliners on Tuesday (6 August) introduced its first of 12 Aurora Class pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) vessels, Höegh Aurora.
The ship was delivered and named at a naming ceremony at China Merchants Heavy Industry’s yard in Jiangsu, China.
On 8 August, it will commence commercial operations and begin its maiden voyage to Japan.
According to the firm, the Höegh Aurora is capable of cutting carbon emissions per car transported by up to 58 percent from current industry average and it is equipped with DNV’s “ammonia ready” and “methanol ready” notations.
Höegh Autoliners added it was the first in the PCTC-segment to be able to operate on carbon-neutral ammonia.
CEO, Andreas Enger, said: “With Höegh Aurora and the Aurora Class, we are pioneering efforts to combat pollution in a hard-to-abate segment. The Aurora Class embodies the change our industry needs.”
The vessel has a capacity of up to 9,100 cars. With its strengthened decks and enhanced internal ramp systems, it can carry electric vehicles on all 14 decks. It is also primed to embrace electric shore power for emissions-free port operations.
The Höegh Aurora will be registered and sailing under the Norwegian flag.
