Hamburg-based marine fuels trading, broking and hedging house ElbOil GmbH on Wednesday (22 October) marked its entry into the green methanol bunkering space through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with Chinese players at Zhoushan, Zhejiang in China.

The MOU to secure green methanol was entered with methanol producer Shangdong Shunli Hydrogen Energy Technology Co Ltd, and green fuels consultancy Shanghai Wenji BioTechnology Co Ltd.

In detail, the arrangement allows ElbOil to secure an annual supply of 30,000 metric tonnes (mt) of green methanol produced from biomass at the manufacturer’s Shandong plant from 2027. The cargo will be distributed to key ports including Zhoushan, Ningbo and Shanghai after production.

Shangdong Shunli Alcohol Hydrogen Energy Technology Co Ltd is a subsidiary of Chinese chemical company Henan Shuncheng Group which is scheduled to operate a total of three methanol production plants with projected production capacity of up to 1 million mt in China.

“This supply chain agreement will see ElbOil performing the role of marketeer, where we offer this exclusive product to the international shipping sector with the mindset of helping the maritime industry prepare for upcoming IMO 2030 and beyond,” Harro Booth, Managing Director of ElbOil Group, told bunkering publication Manifold Times.

“The development is a milestone in Elboil’s corporate direction towards sustainability and marks a significant development after our expansion into China.”

Sherry Shi, Head of Singapore and Chief Representative (China), ElbOil Singapore, continued: “This discussion took place over the span of six months, and we also would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to consultancy Shanghai Wenji BioTechnology which made this happen.”
