Latest figures from classification society DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform saw a total of 16 new orders for alternative-fueled vessels were placed in May 2025.

Half of the 16 new orders were LPG carriers, said Kristian Hammer, Product Manager AFI and Senior Consultant at DNV, adding that May was a “relatively quiet month”.

This was a stark contrast to April which saw a total of 49 new orders for alternative-fuelled vessels were placed.

Six orders for LNG-fueled vessels were added to the orderbook, split between the container (4) and cruise (2) segments. Two orders for methanol-fueled vessels were recorded, with both coming from the tanker segment.

Two LNG bunker vessels were also added in May, adding to the strong momentum in this segment in recent months.

“A total of 136 orders for alternative-fueled vessels have been placed in the first five months of 2025, slightly behind the 150 orders from the first five months of 2024,” said Hammer in a social media post,

“Nonetheless, with the overall newbuild market considerably slower this year, this represents a strong performance, demonstrating the robust nature of the alternative-fuelled space in the face of market uncertainty.”
