China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) recently successfully completed China’s first Ultra Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (0.1% ULSFO) bunkering operation, marking Shanghai Port becoming the first port in the Asia-Pacific region to supply the fuel type for international ships.
According to SIPG Energy (Shanghai) Co Ltd, its Yangshan Shengang Terminal provided unloading, storage and loading services for the ULSFO, produced by CNPC at the Yangshan Port Area.
The domestically produced ULSFO loaded and bunkered this time has a sulphur content of only 0.077% m/m, strictly controlled below 0.10% m/m. It is suitable for vessel engines rated to use ISO 8217 heavy fuel oil.
“Characterised by relatively low viscosity and low density, this fuel boasts excellent ignition properties, effectively enhancing vessel engine efficiency and reducing maintenance costs. Its low sulfur content meets the requirements of Emission Control Areas (ECAs), allowing vessels to operate without Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS),” SIPG Energy said.
“As global shipping industry environmental requirements continue to rise, ULSFO will become a crucial option for cleaner marine fuels. SIPG Energy will actively expand and diversify its portfolio of marine fuel services, offering international shipping companies a wider range of choices.”
