Two of China’s major shipping companies China Merchants Energy Shipping Co. Ltd. and COSCO Shipping Bulk Co. Ltd. now view methanol as their main alternative fuel of the future and will focus on it in their research, according to the former on Thursday (18 August).

Xie Chunlin, Chairman of China Merchants Energy Shipping, met with Gu Jinsong, Chairman of COSCO SHIPPING Bulk in Guangzhou, China, on 17 August to discuss cooperation and exchange views on green and low-carbon transformation of vessels.

According to China Merchants Energy Shipping, both suggested that methanol fuel should be used as their main research direction of future clean ship fuel and the duo will jointly contribute to the national “dual carbon” goals – sometimes referred to as the 2030/2060 goals, described by President Xi Jinping, are to reach its carbon emissions peak in 2030 and become carbon neutral before 2060.
