Spain’s shipping company Baleària and biomethane producer Axpo Iberia have completed making the first supplies of bio-LNG from two Enagás terminals in Huelva and Barcelona.

The Huelva terminal supplied the port of Málaga, where Baleària operates the route to Melilla with the innovative ferry Rusadir, and the Barcelona terminal supplied the fast ferry Margarita Salas, which connects Barcelona with Mallorca and Menorca, with bio-LNG .

These operations have managed to load bio-LNG, supplied by Axpo and with the corresponding Sustainability Certificates, directly onto the ships, thanks to the adaptation of the terminals to process bio-LNG, which is obtained from biomethane injected into the gas network and processed in liquid form.

With the operations, Baleària and Axpo said they have demonstrated the viability of establishing green corridors between European ports, or even connecting two continents, as in the case of the Alboran Sea route.

Jacobo Canseco, director of Green Energy at Axpo Iberia, said: “This new milestone highlights Axpo’s firm commitment to the decarbonisation of maritime transport, focusing on biomethane and bio-LNG  as alternative fuels to help meet European objectives in the energy transition.”

The biomethane supplied and certified by Axpo comes from the treatment of agricultural and livestock waste at the Noguera Renovables plant (Lleida), the first in Spain to produce biomethane from cattle manure, and from the use of organic waste at the Valdemingómez Technology Park (Madrid).
