Shanghai Chimbusco Marine Bunker Co Ltd on Tuesday (27 October) said it launched a municipal-level pilot project to standardise methanol bunkering services for ships, with the initiative scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.

The company held a launch meeting and technical training session on 20 October, marking the start of the project’s implementation phase. Experts from Shanghai Academy of Quality Management Co Ltd attended the meeting to provide guidance.

The project was selected for Shanghai’s 2026 standardisation pilot programme and will run for two years. It aims to establish a standardised service framework covering personnel, equipment, materials, methods and the operating environment, as well as procedures before, during and after methanol bunkering operations.

According to Shanghai Chimbusco Marine Bunker, the initiative aligns with China’s carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals and Shanghai’s plans to develop an international green marine fuel bunkering hub.

During the launch meeting, Shanghai Chimbusco Marine Bunker and the institute discussed the project’s objectives, division of responsibilities and implementation arrangements. Shanghai Chimbusco Marine Bunker said it would draw on its operational experience in methanol bunkering to support the development of the standards, while the institute would provide technical support throughout the project.

A training session was also held to strengthen the project team’s understanding of standardisation. Experts shared practical experience in drafting and reviewing national and industry standards, and outlined key considerations for implementing the pilot project.

Shanghai Chimbusco Marine Bunker and the institute will next work on developing the standardisation framework, drafting the relevant standards and implementing the pilot programme, with the aim of producing methanol bunkering service standards that can be replicated and adopted more widely.
