Guangzhou Port in China recently completed its first green methanol bunkering operation alongside a terminal, supplying 281.6 metric tonnes (mt) of fuel to the COSCO Shipping Carnation, according to Guangzhou Port Group.
The operation took place on 28 September at the Nansha port area of Guangzhou Port, with the methanol bunkering vessel Da Qing 268 delivering the fuel to the container ship.
The Da Qing 268, operated by China Shipping & Sinopec Suppliers (Sinobunker), is described as China’s first methanol dual-fuel oil and chemical bunkering vessel. It has a total tank capacity of 10,362 cubic metres (m3).
The receiving vessel, COSCO Shipping Carnation, is one of the first 16,000-TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships deployed by COSCO Shipping. Measuring 366 metres long and 51 metres wide, the vessel has an 11,000 cbm methanol fuel tank and operates on the US West Coast trade route.
Guangzhou Port said since the beginning of this year, it has completed anchorage-based green methanol bunkering and terminal-based LNG bunkering for international roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vessels and bulk carriers.
With the latest operation, the port said it can provide alternative-fuel bunkering services for container ships, bulk carriers and ro-ro vessels. Its service offerings include LNG, green methanol and biofuel, delivered through different modes including anchorage bunkering, ship-to-ship operations at terminals and LNG truck-to-ship supply.
