Hong Kong launches first government-led green marine fuel training programme

Hong Kong’s Transport and Logistics Bureau on Tuesday (8 April) launched the world’s first administration-led training-the-trainer programme, focused on green bunker fuels.

The programme was held in collaboration with the Maritime Just Transition Task Force (MJTTF) of the United Nations Global Compact, with the Hong Kong Shipowners Association (HKSOA) and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University as supporting partners. MJTTF is responsible for conducting the programme.

HKSOA said the Training-the-trainer Programme: Green Maritime Fuel for Sustainable Shipping brings together representatives from its member companies, empowering them to become certified trainers in the safe and effective use of alternative marine fuels such as ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen.

“This is the world’s first administration-led training-the-trainer programme on green maritime fuel, with the aim to train more personnel with basic knowledge and skills in green maritime fuel,” the bureau said in a statement.

“Through these trainees, such knowledge and skills can be transferred to seafarers and shore-based staff, thereby supporting the maritime industry in operating green vessels in a safe and effective way, thus addressing the manpower needs in developing Hong Kong’s maritime industry.”

The primary targets of the programme are maritime trainers, maritime education and training institutions, maritime regulatory bodies, ship managers, ship owners, seafarers, industry practitioners, and tertiary students studying maritime-related disciplines.

The training programme comprises two three-day courses until 15 April, and a one-day seminar on 16 April 16 specifically for tertiary students studying maritime-related disciplines. The programme will be conducted in English.
