Shipowners are going further in seeking collaboration with methanol producers and maritime centres of excellence to secure their clean fuel supply chain and promote training and awareness around the maritime energy transition.

Methanol marine fuel related developments for Week 48 of 2024:

MOL and Singapore MPA Collaborate on Decarbonization, Digitalization, and Maritime Training

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has entered into a partnership with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to enhance collaboration in decarbonization, digitalization, and human resource development within the maritime industry. The agreement builds on existing decarbonization initiatives and extends cooperation to address broader maritime challenges.

Key areas of the partnership include establishing a supply system for next-generation fuels like methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen, and conducting research on wind propulsion technologies. This initiative aims to support Singapore’s role as a sustainable maritime hub and foster innovation in green shipping technologies.

Takeshi Hashimoto, CEO of MOL, highlighted the importance of this collaboration in tackling critical industry challenges, emphasizing the shared vision for sustainability. MPA’s commitment to creating a forward-looking maritime industry aligns with MOL’s strategies to advance decarbonization and digital transformation. Hapag-Lloyd Secures 250,000 MT Annual Green Methanol Supply with Goldwind

Key Points:

Hapag-Lloyd has entered into a long-term agreement with Beijing-based clean energy firm Goldwind to procure 250,000 metric tons of green methanol annually. This supply will consist of a blend of bio-methanol and e-methanol, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 70% compared to conventional fuels.

Goldwind plans to construct a new green methanol production facility in Hinggan League, China, expected to be operational by late 2027. However, Hapag-Lloyd anticipates receiving initial volumes of green methanol as early as 2026.

This agreement aligns with Hapag-Lloyd’s Strategy 2030, which includes a commitment to the Paris Agreement’s 1.5-degree target and significant investments in sustainable operations. The secured green methanol supply is projected to reduce the company’s fleet emissions by up to 400,000 metric tons of CO₂e annually.

In support of this transition, Hapag-Lloyd is collaborating with Seaspan to retrofit five 10,100 TEU container ships with dual-fuel methanol propulsion systems, scheduled for conversion in 2026. 

COSCO Shipping Partners to Build Green Methanol Plant in Southeast Asia

COSCO Shipping has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with CP Group and Freepoint Commodities to collaborate on advancing green methanol production and utilization. The agreement focuses on constructing a green methanol production facility in Southeast Asia, leveraging regional biomass resources. The plant will adhere to stringent EU standards, ensuring high-quality and sustainable output.

This partnership underscores a shared commitment to decarbonizing the global shipping industry and fostering low-carbon solutions. COSCO highlighted the MoU as a testament to global cooperation in advancing environmentally friendly shipping practices and establishing benchmarks for green fuel innovation. 

Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Launches World’s First Methanol-Fueled Ultramax Bulker

Japan’s Tsuneishi Shipbuilding has launched the world’s first methanol-fueled Ultramax dry bulk carrier, a 65,700 DWT vessel designed to support the company’s decarbonization goals. The vessel, equipped with dual-fuel capabilities, was officially launched on November 22, 2024, and boasts a cargo capacity of 81,500 m³.

The milestone vessel was developed in alignment with Tsuneishi’s “Technology Development Roadmap,” part of the company’s medium-term strategy to achieve carbon neutrality. The ship features advanced methanol fuel tank technology derived from in-house expertise in manufacturing pressure tanks for LPG carriers and LNG fuel tanks.

Masatoshi Date, the factory manager, emphasized Tsuneishi’s commitment to scaling production of methanol-fueled vessels by collaborating with group companies and leveraging overseas factories. The shipyard plans to expand its dual-fuel technology deployment, furthering its role in shaping a sustainable future for the shipping industry. 

Maersk Unveils Methanol-Fueled Boxship A.P. Møller in Singapore Ceremony

AP Moller-Maersk has named its latest methanol-fueled container vessel, A.P. Møller, during a ceremony in Singapore on November 28, 2024. The dual-fuel ship, named after the company’s founder, Arnold Peter Møller, is the newest addition to Maersk’s fleet designed to operate on methanol, reinforcing the company’s decarbonization strategy.

Ditlev Ingemann Blicher, President of Asia Pacific at Maersk, emphasized the significance of this launch in Singapore, a central hub in Maersk’s Asia-Pacific operations. The vessel highlights Maersk’s commitment to sustainable shipping and its leadership in adopting alternative fuels to meet global decarbonization goals.

Maersk has been a pioneer in integrating methanol-powered vessels into its operations, with several such ships already in service and more under construction. The launch of A.P. Møller signifies another milestone in the company’s transition to greener maritime operations.

Pacific Basin Shipping Orders Four Methanol-Fueled Bulk Carriers to Expand Green Fleet

Key Points:

Pacific Basin Shipping has placed an order for four dual-fuel methanol bulk carriers with Nihon Shipyard Co in Japan. These 64,000 DWT Ultramax vessels, capable of operating on methanol, biodiesel, or conventional fuel oil, are scheduled for delivery in 2028 and 2029.

The company emphasized that this order is a significant step in its journey toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The ships are designed to comply with upcoming regulatory requirements, including FuelEU Maritime rules and anticipated IMO mandates on sustainable fuels.

Additionally, Pacific Basin has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Mitsui & Co to secure a supply of green methanol for its fleet, ensuring readiness to meet future decarbonization goals. 

Port of Tanjung Pelepas Completes Inaugural Methanol Bunkering Operation

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), a joint venture between MMC Group and APM Terminals, has successfully conducted its first methanol bunkering operation by refueling the Antonia Maersk, a dual-fuel container vessel capable of operating on methanol. This vessel is the third in a series of 18 large dual-fuel newbuilds commissioned by the Danish shipping company Maersk.

This operation marks PTP’s inaugural ship-to-containership methanol bunkering, underscoring the port’s readiness to handle alternative marine fuels. PTP’s Chairman, Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh, noted that this achievement is pivotal in delivering top-quality services and solidifying PTP’s position as a preferred regional port.

In preparation for this operation, PTP collaborated closely with Maersk, Maersk Oil Trading, the Malaysia Marine Department, Johor Port Authority, and various government agencies. 

The partners conducted tabletop exercises and workshops to establish rigorous safety procedures through comprehensive operational and risk assessments, modeling, and validation. PTP’s CEO, Mark Hardiman, highlighted that this collaboration sets a promising standard for future partnerships in infrastructure development, fuel bunkering capabilities, and knowledge sharing.

World Fuel and partners complete first green methanol bunkering of car carrier in Shanghai

Marine fuel provider World Fuel on Tuesday (21 July) said it successfully completed the first green methanol bunkering of M/V Arctic Tern, with EUKOR Car Carriers and SIPG Energy at the Port of Shanghai. 

Arctic Tern is the first vessel in the new Shaper Class series of car carriers. 

The operation involved the delivery of approximately 2,800 MT of green methanol to Arctic Tern via a ship-to-ship transfer using SIPG Energy’s dedicated methanol bunkering vessel M/V Hai Gang Zhi Yuan, the largest vessel of its kind in operation. 

The bunkering operation was carried out at Haitong Terminal, Waigaoqiao Port Area, Shanghai Port, with cargo handling operations conducted simultaneously during bunkering.

This marks EUKOR Car Carriers’ first green methanol operation and the first time Arctic Tern has bunkered methanol since its delivery on 9 July. The operation marked the first bunkering at Shanghai Port of green methanol produced locally in Shanghai for an international PCTC operator. 

It also demonstrated the city’s integrated green methanol value chain, spanning local production, storage and bunkering, and established a replicable “Shanghai Model” for green methanol supply.

World Fuel arranged the supply and delivery of the fuel on behalf of EUKOR Car Carriers, working with SIPG Energy as the physical supplier at the Port of Shanghai.

The green methanol supplied was produced from municipal solid waste, ISCC-EU certified, and had a carbon intensity value below 25 gCO₂e/MJ.

Arctic Tern is the first of fourteen Shaper Class vessels ordered by Wallenius Wilhelmsen. With a capacity of 9,300 car equivalent units and methanol dual-fuel capability, the vessel will be operated by EUKOR Car Carriers, jointly owned by Wallenius Wilhelmsen and Hyundai Motor Group. Following her first green methanol bunkering, Arctic Tern will continue her maiden voyage from Asia to Europe.

Xavier Leroi, COO Shipping Services at Wallenius Wilhelmsen and CEO of EUKOR Car Carriers, said: “Completing Arctic Tern’s first green methanol bunkering shortly after delivery is a significant milestone towards our decarbonisation ambition for both EUKOR Car Carriers and Wallenius Wilhelmsen. It demonstrates how investments in next-generation vessel technology and fuel flexibility are being translated into real-world operations. 

“This achievement reflects the strong collaboration between all parties involved. Together, we have shown how partnerships across the maritime value chain can help make lower-emission fuels available and operationally viable at scale.”

Mr. Zhang Da, General Manager of SIPG Energy, said, “Welcoming Arctic Tern to the Port of Shanghai for her first green methanol bunkering demonstrates the strength and maturity of our supply capability. Building on our well-established methanol ship-to-ship bunkering services for container vessels, we have already extended such services to pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs). This bunkering sets a new record for the largest single SIMOPs green methanol bunkering for PCTCs in China, marking another step in building Shanghai’s position as a global green energy hub for international shipping.”

This operation follows Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s announcement on 9 July that Arctic Tern would complete her first methanol bunkering shortly after delivery. The vessel entered service on routes between Asia and Europe immediately following handover from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing.

Western Baltic Engineering unveils green methanol bunkering vessel design for Klaipėda

Ship design and engineering service provider Western Baltic Engineering on Thursday (16 July) showcased its latest concept design for a green methanol bunkering vessel, developed for the operational needs of the Port of Klaipėda.

Designed for flexible operations in shallow waters and local bunkering routes, the concept features an 800-metric-tonne green methanol capacity and the potential to supply up to 250,000 metric tonnes (mt) annually. 

“It is Western Baltic Engineering’s first concept dedicated exclusively to green methanol bunkering, expanding our portfolio of alternative-fuel vessel solutions,” the company said in a social media post.

“Building on our experience in methanol-ready vessel design, it reflects our continued focus on enabling the industry’s transition to cleaner fuels.”

“As the maritime sector evolves, engineering companies have a responsibility not only to respond to market needs but also to anticipate future challenges,” said Marius Arkusauskas, Director at Western Baltic Engineering.

China launches methanol shipping supply chain alliance to accelerate green transition

China Waterborne Transport Research Institute under the Ministry of Transport and China Transport News recently jointly launched a Methanol Fuel Shipping Supply Chain Innovation Alliance with 20 organisations spanning the shipping, port, energy, equipment, research and industry association sectors.

The alliance was officially announced during the main event of China Maritime Day 2026 on 11 July, where members also released a joint initiative to develop a collaborative methanol-fuelled shipping supply chain.

The alliance aims to implement China’s national strategy for green economic transformation and support the Ministry of Transport’s “One Network, Four Modernisations” initiative by building a safe, efficient, economical and reliable methanol marine fuel supply chain

Under the joint initiative, alliance members pledged to align with China’s national decarbonisation strategy by promoting methanol as a key pathway for the shipping sector’s green transition and optimising the industry’s energy mix.

The members also pledged to strengthen collaboration across the supply chain to improve coordination between bunker fuel production, transportation and end users while advancing technological innovation.

Lastly, the alliance will support the development of policies, planning and technical standards, promote resource sharing and joint research, and accelerate the large-scale adoption of methanol as a marine fuel.

The alliance brings together companies and organisations representing the entire methanol shipping supply chain.

Members include shipping and port members such as China Changjiang National Shipping (Group) Corporation, COSCO Shipping Bulk Co., Ltd., Shandong Port Group, and Wuhan Chuangxin Jianghai Shipping Co., Ltd.

Energy companies in the alliance include Sinopec Chemical Commercial Holding Company Limited and Methanex Corporation.

Marine fuel suppliers including Sinopec Fuel Oil Sales, China Marine Bunker (PetroChina), SIPG Energy (Shanghai) Co Ltd and Shenzhen Port Energy Development Co Ltd are also part of the alliance. 

Equipment manufacturers in the alliance are CSSC 711th Research Institute, CSSC Power (Group) Corporation Ltd and Chongqing Hongjiang Machinery Co Ltd.

Research, media and industry organisations participating in the alliance include the China Waterborne Transport Research Institute, China Transport News, and the Methanol Institute.

The Methanol Institute said methanol is moving beyond individual projects towards coordinated action across the entire value chain. 

“And China continues to play a leading role in advancing methanol as a marine fuel,” it said in a social media post.  

“We’re proud to work alongside our fellow alliance members to help strengthen the methanol supply chain and support the continued growth of methanol as a marine fuel.”
