Brazilian state-controlled oil and gas producer Petrobras on Tuesday (19 December) said it has tested a B24 biofuel blend on a vessel travelling cabotage routes across the Brazilian coast.
It said the ship was supplied with 860,000 litres of the bio bunker fuel, made up of 24% biodiesel derived at the Rio Grande Terminal on 12 December.
The firm said it estimated the biofuel can reduce the ship’s well-to-wake greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 19% compared to running on conventional bunker fuel.
“In a previous test, carried out in June using biodiesel sourced soybeans and tallow, the reduction in GHG emissions was around 17%,” it said, before adding the biodiesel the firm purchased to compose the mixture followed the ISCC EU RED criteria.
“After the test and validation of the bunker with renewable content is completed, the market for this type of fuel is expected to develop further.”
“We are doubling investments in low carbon, promoting effective social and environmental gains, because we believe in a fair and responsible energy transition. We will invest USD 11.5 billion in low-carbon projects over the next five years.”
