Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) will be offering liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering services by January 1, 2020, says its Vice President of LNG Marketing and Trading, according to Bernama.

Ahmad Adly Alias was delivering a keynote address at the Green Shipping Conference in collaboration with the World Maritime Week Malaysia when he said the development was in support of Malaysia’s ambition as a bunkering hub.

He noted the shipping industry choosing LNG as a marine fuel due to zero sulphur emissions released when burnt, and about 7% of the shipping industry will be using LNG for propulsion by 2030.

“In capitalising this advantage, we have embarked on an initiative to propel Malaysia as an LNG bunkering hub focusing among others, setting up the necessary infrastructures in Pengerang, Johor and Sungai Udang, Malacca,” he said.

He added upgrading operations for Petronas’ regasification terminal in Sungai Udang will be upgraded to perform LNG reloads by the first quarter of 2020, allowing the facility to become a second LNG bunkering hub.

Moving forward, Alias shares Petronas is working with various ministries, authorities and industry players to develop policies, guidelines and procedures for safe and effective bunkering operations.

“Government’s support is critical as Malaysia moves forward to embrace the aspiration to the bunkering hub,” he notes.

“This can be manifested through manifested through provision of incentives or financial assistance to the industries as well as a conducive policy to accelerate the adoption of LNG as a cleaner marine fuel and stimulating sustainable growth.”
