Total sales of marine fuel at Rotterdam port for the second quarter (Q2) of 2018 fell to a historical low since 2013, according to data from the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

About 2.36 million cubic metres (m3) of marine fuel including fuel oil, marine gas oil (MGO), marine diesel oil (MDO) and lubes were delivered at Rotterdam in Q2 2018, 5% lower than sales of 2.49 million m3 in Q2 2017.

Fuel oil sales in the comparative period was 1.98 million m3 (2.08 million m3 on year); while MGO sales were recorded at 334,053 m3 (336,355 m3 on year); MDO sales at 25,208 m3 (49,091 m3 on year); and lubes at 25,269 m3 (26,425 m3 on year).

Sales of liquefied natural gas (LNG) marine fuel, on the other hand, witnessed a 78% jump on quarter.

The port posted 1,297 metric tonnes (mt) of LNG bunker sales during Q2 2018, higher than 729 mt seen in Q1 2018.

In early July, the Port of Rotterdam and various bunkering parties (VT Group, Unibarge, Titan LNG, FTS Hoftrans and Transnational Blenders) launched a trial project to make bunkering operations more efficent.
