The Finnish Environmental Institute-owned marine research vessel Aranda will be the first Finnish ship to be upgraded with a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system, says propulsion company Schottel.

The company is providing a pump jet to be installed as a new auxiliary propulsion unit for the 28-year old ship.

Upgrades include a lithium ion 200kWh battery pack that can be later upgraded to 2,000 kWh, and the addition of a 165 kW fuel cell system.

“The 165 kW (2 x 82.5 kW AC) fuel cell powertrain (hybridised with a battery) will provide power to the vessel’s electrical equipment and dynamic positioning during measurements, free from vibration, noise and air pollution,” says ABB.

Finland-based technology and automation supplier Valmet, meanwhile, will upgrade the machinery control and monitoring system of the Aranda.

Valmet's delivery includes the upgrade of the vessel’s current Valmet DNA control and machinery monitoring system, training and commissioning.

The Aranda begun upgrading works at the Rauma shipyard in late July 2017; the project is scheduled to be finished in 2018.

The vessel’s length will be extended by seven meters to 66 meters, with research and laboratory facilities being built.
