The International Maritime Organisation on Tuesday (22 September) said the IMO Research and Development (R&D) Forum on From Fossil to Future: Marine Pollution Preparedness in the Age of Alternative Fuels concluded in Singapore
The event brought together regulators, scientists, industry representatives and emergency responders to address emerging pollution-response challenges linked to the maritime energy transition.
Held over two days and hosted by Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority, with support from China, the Forum examined preparedness and response considerations for a range of alternative marine fuels, including LNG, LPG, methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, biofuels and e-fuels.
Participants explored how the different characteristics of these fuels could affect pollution incidents and response strategies as their use in shipping continues to expand.
Discussions covered spill fate and behaviour, modelling, risk assessment, emergency response, post-spill actions and international cooperation mechanisms. Through expert presentations, case studies, panel discussions and interactive working sessions, participants shared current research and practical experience to help inform future response planning and preparedness efforts.
A key outcome of the forum was broad recognition of the need for stronger collaboration between governments, industry, academia and the scientific community to address knowledge gaps and strengthen preparedness before major incidents occur. Participants also highlighted the importance of ensuring that ongoing research, operational experience and international cooperation continue to inform the development of response protocols for alternative fuels.
The forum was held alongside SpillAsia in Singapore, providing an opportunity to connect policy discussions with operational spill-response expertise and identify priorities for future work.
